Terry,
Thanks for the report.
I am currently in China (left US Dec 9th).
I brought about a pound of freshly roasted beans (about 1/2 each of IIdido Misty Valley and some Sumatran beans) but as yet we have not been able to enjoy it as we could not find a a grinder or a french press in any stores. But we finally have made contact with a supplier and tomorrow promises a new hand grinder and a french press.
We are having a great time meeting my son's in-laws. We no longer have jet lag have been walking in Mian Yang. This city is very nice. Is seems less crowded and a lot cleaner than the cities we visited in the summer of 2000. Will have much more to report later.

Hi Dave,
On one campout, I forgot my grinder. This of course was totally
unacceptable. Here's how I coped: I used a drinking glass and a 2
quart pan - crushing the beans in the pan with the bottom of the
drinking glass. I continued to work the beans until they were roughly
the grind I wouold make for drip....
Perhaps this can help alleviate this terrible situation...
Tell us a bit about China, where you are, what you're doing, and some
description of sights and sounds - please...

On a campout, just take yer trusty .45 cal handgun, carefully unload
it, then use the bottom of the handle to crush the beans in a crock or
earthenware vessel.
That would be, of course, using the ol' mortal and pistol method.
