Topic: Merry Christmas Dennis was USS Eisenhower in the news :-( (8 msgs / 215 lines)

It's unusual not to hear from Dennis for so long. I hope he knows how
much we all appreciate what he and the other men and women serving on
the Ike are doing for us.
Merry Christmas Dennis.

Vicki, if something is happening or a 'situation' arises, they turn off
E mail to the crew. It's standard operating procedures.
Then again, the niprnet is prone to 'down days' anyways.
Then again, it's all about bandwidth, they only got so much.... perhaps
they are doing video conferencing with folks, letting the men on the
ship talk to wives back home via a video link... if thats the case, then
again, down goes the e mail to conserve bandwidth for the vid conference.
I understand your concern but am just trying to let you know that juse
because he went 404 for a few days does not automatically mean something
bad has happened.
I remember times when we were heading a certain course, and because of
that the antenna to the satellite was blocked so no mail for us
either... things just happen.
put it this way, when he does get e mail back he'll have all of our
letters waiting for him....
then again, he IS a combat weenie,so he's probably sleeping is all it is :)

Bandwidth is limited, all personal communications are on a availability
basis. But also, there's an increased level of threat to DoD networks. He
may not be seeing these messages because they aren't text emails. Here's a
link to a story:http://www.fcw.com/article97178-12-22-06-WebIs there an option for text emails from the list? I don't remember seeing
one.

He should still get the e mail just that the links are disabled and are
viewable as the gobbletygook of the code in text format. If you sent
any attachments, chances are they have been stripped off. This all
should happen at NOCC before it hits them.
which brings us to this.
Why is the military still using outlook for their mail... the program is
a HUGE security leak, and there are way better programs out there many
for free.
I don't want to hear, because of the support either because we know
thats a joke. I just find it strange that they still keep with that
kludge yet should not really be suprised when I look at some of the
equipment still in operation that we had to fix almost daily.
Welcome to the 21st century military style, now take this tin can,
careful you don't tangle the string, and walk over there.... can you
hear me now???? good......

Mike, I only send Email as text-only, including mail to the list. I only
get it that way, as well. I'm guessing that the computers on the Ike are
set to strip out formatting and deliver all mail as text only, if that
is a concern.
I suspected that we were not hearing from Dennis because folks on-board
are using the available bandwidth for other, hopefully seasonal, things.
Still, I hope he checks in soon.

But Vicki, we don't actually get email from you.
You send it just to the list. The list's software wraps it (changing the
header and adding a footer with links to sweetmarias & the list) and then
resends it to everybody on the list as bulk email. I can see that you sent
the original message as plain text and it is included as such as a MIME
object within the email I receive from the list.

I echo everyone's concern. I hope Dennis is merely busy celebrating
the holidays with his fellow servicemen and women aboard the Ike.
