Dennis,
I was told a very high percentage of the world's construction cranes are in=
Dubai. After visiting there, there is no doubt in my mind this is true.=
There are something like 4000 major buildings going up all at once.
For those who have trouble believing you can put a ski slope inside a=
shopping mall, I've posted some quick pix from myrecent trip here:
The Gold Souk is interesting. But if you want REALLY interesting stop by the=
Naif Souq, just a few blocks away. When I was there a month ago the place=
was packed with shoppers, and I was the only non-native in the place. Tiny=
alleys cramped with clothing, almost all of it variations on the full black=
outfits worn by the conservative women. I thought itwas fascinating until I=
came across one shop selling nothing but wigs!. Despite wearing head to toe=
black outfits, these women were buying wigs. I didn't want to take a=
picture because I was told this could offend them, but I just had to stop=
 and stare.
Just across the street from the Naif Souq is the shoe area. I bought two=
nice pairs of shoes (made in China) for about $6 a pair.
I got invited back to teach in March and am definitely looking forward to re=
turning.

Ah, Opa.
I lived in Denver for several years. The Christmas blizzard of 1983 (which cost the mayor his job) made me decide that I really, really like southern California. So that's where I've been since then.
I have friends that live up in Evergreen, and they got 57 inches during the storm last week.
