Does anybody know anything about an event called coffee fest? I saw
a little blurb in a magazine but it didn't give many details. I
tried to get onto the coffeefest.com website but couldn't connect.
Apparently, they are holding it in Chicago this year, which isn't too
far away. Mainly, I'm wondering if this would be a good day trip for
a novice like myself or if this is more geared to professionals and/
or larger commercial operations. If I could get some hands-on demos
and maybe some good deals on new equipment, this would definitely be
a good investment of time. Any info on the event would be great.
Thanks all.

Coffeefest is indeed geared towards coffee businesses. About zero to do with
home roasting or brewing. That said you'd likely have fun attending. Lots of
different seminars etc. as well as hundreds of booths where you often can
score free samples. Though most of the stuff is near worthless pre-mixed
this and that for quick preparation foo-foo beverages. Sometimes can get
good quality commercial roast samples, watch roasters in action, watch pros
pull shots on various espresso machines etc. I learned a LOT observing Dr.
John of Malabar Gold at his booth at NASCORE 4 years ago after only having
Silvia a short time.
Yeah, coffeefest.com site seems to be down at the moment.

Thanks Mike-
I think I'll make a day (weekend?) out of it. I'll leave family and
friends and drive 100 miles so I can watch coffee being made. I
truly am becoming obsessed as my friends have pointed out. Well, in
the words of a famous American poet, "If lovin' coffee is wrong, I
don't wanna be right."

Coffee Fest is a traveling show, 3-4 cities a year.
I attended the Coffee Fest in Las Vegas this year and was seriously
disappointed. There were no demos on the floor, no espresso to be sampled.
Geared toward wannabe coffee shop owners, with no "all about the bean"
attitude that I could detect. Lots of booths selling flavorings. A few
greens suppliers, Diedrich was there with their sample roaster (not
operating). There were some educational opportunities but the worthwhile
ones were for the new roaster certification and cost an arm and a leg.
Just my opinion,
VegasBob
