I'll double that yuk. My preference is the white unfolded filter circles,
"FP-1". Ftr, of all my coffeemakers, I use the Chemex the most. - Steve D.

As I type, I'm dringking a splendid cup of Brazil
Fazenda Ipanema "Dulce" brewed in my Chemex using a
brown filter. No paper taste or other off flavors.

Andy, Out of curiosity, did you do any pre-soaking of the filter?

I rinsed it under the tap to wet it. Does that count
as pre-soaking? I'll use a brown filter tomorrow
without wetting it to see if I can tell the
difference. I'll have to use a different coffee
though, I finished off the roasted Dulce.

Still...I suggest trying the white ones. You might be surprised. - Steve D.

6) From: Andy Thomas
I don't think I would be much surprised. I've been
using white filters for a few months. Since I still
had a few left-over brown filters, I decided to find
out if I could taste a difference. I couldn't.

Maybe I'm a supertaster...? *Many* of us can tell an obvious difference.
Most of my friends at the hunting club say "what's that funny taste...like a
paper sack?". To me, {and many others on this list} the brown paper taste is
VERY obvious. I've seen people who drank grocery store coffee that couldn't
tell the difference. Perhaps their taste buds were dead. Of course we are
all wearing a different set of taste buds. If brown filters make you happy
that's fine with me. If I were out of filters I'd use the brown ones, but
only if I have to. How about this... You use the brown ones - I'll use the
white ones.

Great post. Thanks. I will assume you are serious and add that if your friends at the hunting club are curious about the flavor of their coffee I suggest you shoot and cook a fresh rabbit. Old game does taste like a paper sack.
Brown/white is not an issue here Steve. It's the long fur on the ears that make the soup taste like shit.
If I were you I woud stick with whities or you may not know what you doo.

I don't like the brown filters unless I boil them. I still have to
run hot water through the white ones, but I would preheat the chemex
anyway, so not as big of a deal.
