Topic: question for espresso drinkers (65 msgs / 1672 lines)

I have a question for the espresso/cappuccino drinkers.  Drinking
coffee is part of my morning routine.  I either drip brew or use a
press pot.  Lately it's been the press pot that's seen more action.  I
rarely have time during the day to invest in routinely pulling a shot
of espresso.  Do the espresso drinkers primarily drink espresso in the
morning, afternoon, or evening?  Is it your primary coffee drinking
method?
Growing up in an Italian family, espresso and cappuccino was an after
dinner or lunch drink at family gatherings, holidays, etc. and not an
every day thing.  I really do enjoy espresso (especially with a little
bit of lemon peel in the demitasse) and  someday I'd like to start
learning the art but I need to figure out where it will fit in.

Italian as well here..
At work - aeropress and either black with sugar or with milk and sugar 
At home I rarely have brewed coffee, unless im going to be driving around a
bit, then I use the aeropress, press pot, or make an americano.  Otherwise
at home, espresso first thing in the morning, then sometimes a capp with
breakfast, and depending on the day, another espresso in the afternoon. As
the coffee got better, I saved the lemon for my water chasers.

Bricoletta primary brewing device and only brewing device on kitchen
counter. I can make Debi & I first cup of coffee in the morning =
Americanos
when I first get up before my aging eyes can even focus faster than any
other brewing method. Of course Bric' on a timer to go on an hour plus
before we get up.
I used to use other "convenience" brewing methods for first pot of the
morning, but the cup just isn't nearly as good as can be had with =
espresso
extraction. 
This was glaringly reinforced NY Eve. Brought a 50:50 mix of Brazil
YB:Harrar FTO Oromia to make a press pot at my sister's NY Eve party. =
(Just
for Debi & I, the rest of the group coffee abstaining Mormons:-)  While =
the
press pot cup was "ok", it lacked both mouthfeel and flavor compared to =
an
Americano. (Or actually, for espresso based "coffee" strength I pull =
more a
short Café' Crema style pull then add water ala Americano.) Confirmed =
not
just my imagination by making second cup of NY Day morning same 50:50 =
Brazil
YB:Harrar Oromia 4oz pulls (18gr double basket) Café' Crema =
Americanos. Now
that's the cup I was expecting from them thar beans!

So most espresso drinkers are primarily espresso drinkers, that's the

Hi Kevin,
I brew a drip-pot every morning in a Melitta Clarity - this is
standard for my wife, my 16yr old son, and me...  I usually have an
espresso5-6 times a week, but the machine is down, and I haven't fixed
it yet.  (I did fix the window and door-sensor for the Porsche, built
the requisite kids' toys, and I painted my workshop)
Most espresso drinkers are varied in their response to the question...
 I usually pull lattes or cafe cremas...  (latte = 2-3 shots +
microfoamed milk, crema = 4oz on a 25 second pull, so the grind is
more coarse)

Americano: shot of espresso with hot water added to taste for approx'
"coffee" strength cup. IMO virtually any and all coffees and roast =
levels
can make outstanding Americano. 
Can't speak for "most" espresso drinkers. But yes, espresso extraction =
our
primary coffee brewing method throughout the day. Be it wake up Café' =
Crema
Americano, breakfast cappuccino or macchiato, straight shots later in =
the
day or evening, after dinner Café' Crema Americano or cap'... The =
fasted,
most versatile, brewing method also yielding the most the bean has to =
offer.
Of course, espresso brewing also the brewing method that takes the most =
time
and effort to Master, like a lifetime, same as roasting! (Note: Lifetime =
to
Master not necessarily a lifetime to get really good at:-)

Straight espresso is all I've made or drank at home since the late  90's.  I 
drink it morning and afternoon.  The only time I steam milk  is if I have 
company.  I think steaming at 5am might require me to think  too much.  The best 
part of waking up is a triple shot of homeroast in my  cup.
I started with a Solis  SL90 paired with a Rocky grinder and swithced  to a 
Sylvia this summer.

I'm at least a year away from any monetary investment but I plan on
using this time for research.

I was about to warn you off the Kenneth Davids book but then I realized mine 
is a first edition I bought back in the 70s. AT that time there were very 
few home espresso makers and no noteable enthusiast's community for home 
esperesso making and drinking, so his book is way out of date. Then I 
checked Amazon and discovered that his book is now in its 5th edition, and 
I, therefore, don't have a clue about what he has to say/teach concerning 
home espresso techniques of technologies.

Kevin, I tried to learn all I could before jumping into espresso, 
too.  There is a lot of knowledge and fascinating reading and history and 
you will enjoy it, but you really will not learn about espresso until you 
start making it and learning the art of producing first rate shots.  I'm 
not trying to discourage you from reading and learning, rather the 
opposite, but you will only really begin to understand espresso when you 
start making it.

first coffee of the day.  Espresso for me is more of a fascination than a
way of life.  I am playing with lever machines right now.  I am enjoying the
lever action, but it is limiting when I have to pull shots for everyone
else.  I am considering selling a number of my toys and setting up a
dedicated espresso center with a LaSpaziale S1 and a Mazzer Mini grinder and
telling the family they are going to have to learn to make their own
coffee.  Like Mike, I much prefer a good Americano to a drip cup of coffee.
On New Years day, I found myself  the barista instead of the "man of the
house," enjoying the Oklahoma - Boise State game.  When doing taste
comparisons you just can't beat pressure extraction to bring the most flavor
out of the bean, so I would like to be setup more like Mike.

And yes, with an espresso machine you don't need any other methods of
brewing coffee; the machine can do it all. But I'm probably 70% machine
drinks vs 30% others: press, vacuum, aero, Turkish to name the most common
methods I would not want to go without for very long.

Interesting query.
I have two espresso in the morning; usually two espresso in classic demitasse cup from my grandmother or a cafe crema and an espresso.
I do not drink any coffee at any other time of the day. I get my heart started between 4 or 5 am with my special cups and the "roast of the day".
Since I try every coffee I get from Tom as an espresso each day can be an adventure.
At times my neighbors will smell the aroma and pop over and they will most likely want an americano.

Care to summarize the diff b/t a café au lait and latte?
To me: latte = espresso with 1/2 froth and 1/2 microfoam
Café au lait = brewed, well, press pot coffee with warmed milk
To most it seems café au lait is press pot with frothed milk from a =
milk
frother similar to what a press pot looks like.

Have you ever tried to drink a demitasse filled with home-crushed oil
paint?  Or perhaps you've considered painting with a variety of
espresso mased media?
Both seem scary to me.  On the other hand, what I get from my fellow
home-roasters compares favorably to what I find at Swill-of-the-Day
downtown, to the point that homeroast MUST be an art form...

Leo, don't be overly defining.  Art has many meanings, not all are "fine 
art," which is what Picasso is, or supposed to be. [grin]  Art is what you 
do when engineering and science fail.  Making a perfect espresso requires 
engineering and science, but more than that, it requires art, meaning that 
style and method that are not definable in specific terms are employed.
For me, it is even more strange, I approach espresso in a ritualistic 
manner much as a pagan high priest would a ritual...well, being a pagan, 
that is kind of natural, come to think of it.

Kevin, every cup of coffee I have starts out as espresso.  I may dilute it 
to be an Americano, but it starts life as an espresso.  The reason for this 
is that, in my never humble opinion, the espresso extraction process gets 
more flavor from the beans than any other extraction method.
I will use all kinds of roasts in my espresso machine from a light Haarar 
to an Italian roasted Macha-Java.  Each seems to yield more flavor to the 
10 bar pressure needed for proper espresso extraction than from any other 
brewing method I have tried...admitting that I've not tried them all.
In the morning, I pull a triple shot and add the same amount of water for 
my first Americano.  After that, I add less and less water until by noon, 
I'm doing straight espresso, if I drink more after breakfast, that is.  My 
wife enjoys cappuccinos, which I make for her, but never combine coffee 
with milk, myself.

I'm an exception, but for me espresso in capps is my only drink, two a
day: one in the morning before leaving for work, and one after lunch at
work (unless it's the week-end of course!). Occasionally I'll have a
decaf capp in the evenings.

traveling, which I will be in a couple of weeks.

Hmmm. Traveling in Europe gave me a differenbt persoective on that. Cafe au 
lait, Caffe latte, and Cafe con leche were all the same thing: espresso in 
hot milk (not necessarily frothed) in French, Italian, and Spanish,

Hello,
first post from a casual lurker. ;-) I'm studying music (lots of  
practicing at home) and working as a computer programmer from home.  
My girlfriend needs to get up very early in the morning while I'm  
going at a quite slow pace. Just taking my time in front of the  
espresso equipment is a nice and calm way to start the day. I guess  
I've had too much coffee since I won't say I get the caffeine kick  
that one perhaps could expect.
During the day I need a break every now and then, and just making a  
good cup, focussing on something totally different with all the  
passion that goes in to making a good cup, is just the right break  
that cleans up my mind, gets my thoughts straight and lets me  
continue to work on my baroque interpretations or on the code I'm  
debugging.
So these are my habits. A nice cup in the evening is also not  
unheared of, perhaps with a glass of wiskey at the side. This  
becoomes an awful lot of coffee, but then again I'm a Norwegian and  
we drink an awful lot of coffee. ;-) I'll try your suggestion with  
lemon peel soon. :-)

I assume it's not deliberate, but I've spent the last three hours trying
unsuccessfully to delete messages by stereoplegic from my inbox. I could be
mistaken, but I think the odd characters in your e-mail address are
disabling deletion of your messages from my mail server, and killing my
anti-virus software. If that's correct, it would be quite reasonable for you
to suggest that those products shouldn't be so easily confused by a few
special characters, but that's no help to me. I can't download my mail, and
I can't even kill your messages using webmail.
I hereby respectfully request that you adopt a conventionally formatted user
name for e-mail purposes. :-)

You could try gmail where this isnt a problem.  Of course, that will
make many others reply about how thier email does the same thing,

Thanks very much. With another hour of trying, I finally succeeded in
deleting your two messages by webmail, and that seems to have eliminated the
problem.
It was an odd problem indeed, since I'm using pretty mainstream software
(Outlook 2003, Norton Internet Security, unknown PHP webmail software
provided by my ISP). Whatever the cause (and I still think it was most
likely those special characters, but can't prove it) it affected all three,
though it may have affected Outlook only by grinding Norton Antivirus to a
halt (or vice-versa). I actually thought it was a deliberate
denial-of-service attack until I traced it down to your two messages, and
saw they were normal list messages.
