Topic: OT: Re: +Signal to Noise (6 msgs / 238 lines)

Ok, im gonna pipe up but it isn't going to be another mee too post...
If you are hypersensitive etc etc, do yourself a favor and delete this
message now because I won't entertain the private whining afterwords if
you continue on.
Ed, you are complaining about OT posts, yet in your post complaining
about OT posts, you yourself are OT, and you didn't even label it
OT....as complained about earlier in yet another mislabeled post about OT.
For net nanny, you get a grade of F.
A bit anal retentive am I, possibly; but seems it'd be fitting right in.
Next thing we have is folks complaining about receiving hundreds of
posts... yah that can be an issue, i will give you that, but there have
been days where I received that many posts on stuff ON topic,...
technically... but guess what... I don't do espresso, this, that.and the
next thing.. so in essence they are pretty much NOT topic of interest to
me. I learned where my delete key was.
Why is it that some stuff that is OT, people whine, yet other stuff,
like lets say, a certain persons band playing here or there, as an
example...the posts go on and on and on... mostly OT... and nobody ever
complains about that OT? Just an observation to the selectiveness of
the 'not acceptable' OT posts here. Nothing personal...
Beauuuuutifullll Plooooomage..
Then we get the threats, if you don't stop the OT, ill take my mouse
and Ill go home... fine, whatever, if spending an entire three minutes
a day deleting mail is that big of an issue in your life, well. ... it
must be nice not to have any other concerns there pal.
Ok, someone forgot to put OT in a header, BFD, if it's *that* horrible
of a trauma for you to receive ot mail... how hard is it to make a
filter with & filter anything with the word pierogi.... or
whatever.... in it? or hire some high school dropout to screen your
mail for you.
Now we get the drivvel posts.. oh I can't make up my mind, do I stir or
shake it...should I spurt one lump or two into my coffee?? front to
back, or back to front...or.. perhaps roundy roundy.. someone please
help me put my pants on... and for the record yes, I too have been
guilty of these on occasion as well. Technically this IS on topic since
the word 'coffee' was mentioned in there.... somewhere... but how useful
is it really?
Then we get the control freaks... we NEED another list, we need more
admin, we need yet another 50 layers of controls, filters, and protocol
in the list... wow... does that sound like the government worker stuck
on an escalator, screaming for help or what?
Actually, until this food fight started, the posts, while OT, were
actually quite civil on the list.. and informative.. Hell... even mike
and brett were getting along... and you had to ruin that.... nice going
and the worst part about it.... I didn't even start this food fight....
::sigh:: I must be getting old...

Actually, I'd rather things stay the way they are. But if that's the
only way we'd be able to respond to portions of otherwise on-topic
posts and also maintain a sense of community (rather than be muzzled
like on the aformentioned anal-retentive pen list, which threatened
to expel me for wishing the list happy Rosh Hashonah when one of the
list's sponsoring dealers posted that he'd be incommunicado for the
High Holy Days), then that's a reasonable compromise.

One problem is that all of the ideas proffered thus far fall into the
category of "if I don't understand it, it must be simple / cheap" dogma ...
including Tom policing the list. Tom is running a business ... TOM IS
RUNNING A BUSINESS! He travels all over the world to bring you the best
coffees in the world and does not have time for nonsense like policing a
mailing list. Seriously, from a business perspective, if the mailing list
becomes a problem and my source of income is selling coffee beans, then I
turn off the mailing list; I push a button and solve the problem.
This list, in the time that I have been a member, seems to police itself
quite well and operates in cycles of lots of OT to hardly any messages at
all, negating the necessity of asking our humble host to spend more money on
this (and other lists) that is provided to us as a freebie ... TOM IS
RUNNING A BUSINESS!
It would be a real shame for people not to send a welcome message to a
newbie because they feel they need to manage someone else's inbox. If
deleting email causes you genuine heartburn on top of your long commute, you
REALLY NEED PERSPECTIVE IN LIFE! Email me offlist, and I will help you with
perspective. Be warned, while very real, the perspective might too much for
you to handle.
To all of the other folks that make Sweet Maria's, the business, happen on a
daily basis, this email recognizes your efforts too and not just
secondarily. We know that it is every single one of you that make this
happen. I just received and responded to an email from Maria today as part
of the 24 pounds of coffee that I ordered; I have also been contacted by
Derek on several occasions who is always supremely helpful! Even if I don't
know your name and you work at Sweet Maria's, I, my palate, my wife and my
customers, THANK YOU! Perhaps someone could publish a list of those that
work at Sweet Maria's so that we could send them a community Thank You ... I
assume we would have to label "OT" for the benefit of a few?
Respectfully,
Eddie

1st rule about OT, don't talk about OT
2nd rule about OT, don't talk about OT
3rd rule about OT, If this is your first time engaging in OT, you
have to post!
Sorry everyone, I broke the first 2 rules of fight club, oops I mean
OT discussion.
seriously I don't mind the OT too much, but I would have to agree
that it has been a little out of hand lately

In the past, fights have broken out over OT issues and some have stepped in
to police the list. Tom has stepped up and said not to do that. He said he
would take care of issues as the need arises. I usually stay out of
discussions like this for that very reason, but I'm at the point where I see
the list becoming useless to a homeroaster due to the off topic banter, and
Tom is not saying anything. I've been here too long to just fade away.
Homeroasting and other homeroasters are much to important to me to just
quit, so I spoke up.
I'm finished commenting on this. We are just diluting the list more by
discussing OT.
