Topic: Arabian coffee? (9 msgs / 463 lines)

Is there coffee from Arabia?
I was asked this and it brought me up short. I see Tom lists
African/Arabia coffee as a general region. But also has this quote
"Technically, Yemen is on the Asian continent (on the Arabian
Peninsula) although it is really just a stone's throw from Africa,
across the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. For coffee reasons, and
since there is no other "Arabian" coffee, we put it in the family of
tastes that are North African." here http://www.sweetmarias.com/coffee.arabia.yemen.html.And we have "Arabica" coffee. So, anyone care to expound? Is there
coffee from Arabia? Is Mohka the only one? All Yemen?

In my mind you would first have to define Arabia. Is it merely what is now
the Arabian Peninsula or does it encompass what was once the Arabian Empire?

i believe that's why it's sometimes called arabian (*$ sells "arabian"
mocha sanani. i'm assuming because it's more recognizable that way, not
many people know where yemen is or even that there's a country by that
name). coffee was brought from ethiopia to what is now yemen when it was
part of the arabian empire. arabians sterilized the beans they sold (i
know boiling green beans was one method) to maintain their monopoly, but
eventually it was smuggled into other countries (india for example).

To the best of my knowledge, yes the only coffee that is available from
Arabia is from Yemen (directly north of me right now)
Now my knowledge level is not that great but my understanding to find
coffee growing regions get a map/globe look for elevation between the
tropic of Capricorn and the tropic of Cancer... If I am incorrect list
please correct me.

Is this what u are talking about?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Cole_bombingSo, yore saying - continue to fund the terrorist, but rename the coffee so
you can sleep tonight?

6) From: Scott Marquardt
If that's a perception some people have, I guess they don't know how
unprofitable it can be to grow coffee.
Coffee is so unlike the 1st ranked commodity in where its money ends up.

Still wishing I was out there with ye, Dennis.

From my perspective there may be another reason: ever since October 12
2000 Yemen is not a "good" place therefore to not give the implication
that coffee is funding the terrorists not referring to Yemen might be a
good thing...
Just my perspective....after all perception is everything right?

Yes that is the event I am refering to, but I was saying that the
perception is that if you say Yemen then it must fund the terrorists...
I'm not saying that is does just the perception might cause the name
Yemen to be removed.

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
I have the same sentiments about the coffee being not being a "Cash
Cow" from the growers perspective, Perception is everything in todays
world.
