Topic: Vac Pots in Hollywood (4 msgs / 75 lines)
1) From: Paul Jolly
Okay, so there I am watching "Double Indemnity"
for the umpteenth time. Fred MacMurray is
working late with the young woman who wants to be
a writer. She makes a pot of coffee to keep them
up, and...hey, is that a Cory she's using?
I had no idea that vac pots were commonly used
back in the forties. Some "older" folks have
since informed me that they were de riguer. I
hope I get one soon (got a bid in on e-bay right
now).
Cheers,
Paul

There's a Hepburn/Tracy movie (Woman of the Year, 1951, iirc) in which Hepburn's character is making breakfast to prove to Tracy that she can be a "proper housewife." One of the tasks she botches royally, which is the whole point of the scene, is making coffee in a vac pot. She puts about a pound coffee in the carafe and the water in the funnel an places it on the hot burner while she attempts toast, eggs, etc. The result is predictably disastrous. It looked like a Silex wide-neck rig.

Whoops--that wasn't "Double Indemnity" I was
watching (after all, Fred MacMurray drinks
nothing but bourbon, beer or bland tea in that
one). It was "Sunset Boulevard", of course.
