Hi Tom,
this really helped me, so I hope you don't mind if I post it here.
I had purchased the Decaf Komodo blend several months back, and can remember
really liking it. Recently I roasted some and was shocked to find it didn't
seem to have any flavor. Then I did as Tom suggested (his response below),
stopped just after first crack, and amazingly there was the flavor I
remembered!!
This was a great lesson in roasting for me. I had tried to roast a
little darker before I wrote Tom, thinking that would bring out some flavor.
I thought maybe because decaf starts out brown/black, I just didn't roast
far enough past first crack. Decaf doesn't seem to adhere to the same temp
profiles, so I have a harder time roasting by temp., it seems to need about
25F more than regular coffee.(anyone else notice this?) I was sure I
remembered it being good ( I ordered 20lbs, so I must of liked it!!), but I
was stumped, could green decaf go stale? It had an incredible aroma, but
no taste, What happened to the flavor? I have always found an incredible
aroma to be indicative of a great cup. I was stumped! So I wrote Tom...
HELP! :)
This is an incredible decaf, I just had a cup and it makes me wonder why I
don't drink it more often. I tend to think of decafs as second rate and
usually will go without a late night cup of coffee rather than have decaf.
This is certainly not a second rate cup, it is one of the best blends I've
had- which is why I bought 20lbs of it!
