Topic: OT: Time from order to notification (23 msgs / 550 lines)
1) From: Floyd Lozano
Howdy,
I don't know if this is on topic for this list, but in your experience,
what's the delay from 'order' to 'notification'. It's a Harvey order so I
don't expect tracking, but wondering when I should expect the email saying
it shipped. I ask because I stupidly did not record the order number and
there's no way to view your order history, and I wanted to add a pound or 2
of the new arrivals to that order so was hoping to be able to modify it
before it was packed and shipped! There's my life story, so, anyone have an
idea?
Thanks!

Did you sign up for an account? If so, you should be able to log in and
find your current order.

I can log in but it doesn't show me the order, since I already placed it on
Friday. Or is there some way to see past orders that I don't yet know
about?
Thanks!

Floyd - looks like you have gmail - can you search on "order" and come
across it that way?

Well, if you ordered on Friday it wouldn't be sent yet. They don't ship
on weekends, so I imagine it would probably go out today - tomorrow at
the latest.

If you use Harvey, I don't think you get an email - no tracking.

I did see that the system was unable to send some order notification
emails ... the problem was on our end. I will see if we can resend
them somehow. The other thing is to plug in the order number on our
order tracking page to verify it being sent. of course you have to
wait a bit, like until the end of the next business day, since the
data isn't sent to UPS until the address tag is issued and the data
sent to UPS.http://www.sweetmarias.com/ups.trackingREF.htmlTom

i didn't figure that tracking would work if it wasn't UPS - it's Harvey!.
And I don't have the order # since I didn't get the email. Chicken and egg
problem

Yeah, me too - ordered via UPS Friday, no notification, and of course I
didn't write down or print the order number. This has happened before but
the orders have always come, so no worries ... I just can't remember which
decafs I ordered so I can't pre-update my spreadsheet ... life is tough.

I'm not sure which day I placed the order, but on last Thursday, 2/1/07, I
got two e-mails, one from SM with the order number, and one from Endica,
each stating that it had been sent. On Saturday, 3/3/07, Harvey (called
Beverly here) brought the order. This Tuesday, 2/6/07, the USPS delivery
notification discovered the order and announced that it had been delivered.
Not "tracking" like UPS where you can watch your package get on and off the
several trucks, but adequate and if the recipient wasn't you, then timely
enough for an effective squawk. Delivery and price were excellent which is
what they were paid for.

Maybe right after it does go out?
Which would you rather have, some 1's and 0's or Green Coffee Beans?
When you use Harvey, just get a 10 of one you can't pass up, or maybe a
couple of Fivers. Don't sweat the chicken feed addenda.
This business of one and two pound orders is for the Jungle Birds. You
better hope they're NTG. If you actually like them- too bad, because you
won't have enough to sample and play with roasting and brewing styles.

Ummm - RayO, we're mostly talking about the automated verification email
that normally comes out right after the order is placed, and Tom has
indicated that that wasn't working, probably starting sometime Friday. No
biggie, that, but irritating to us grumpy old men, who want both the
electrons and the beans and who forget to write down order numbers. Kinda
like not being able to track my prescription refills - exactly like that,
actually - I need my drugs! Not that I don't have a stash (of beans, that
is) ...

mainly i wanted to add a couple lbs to the order since a couple new ones
appeared on the list. no biggie. and at this point, i don't have enough
experience to know 'what i like' because i have only been roasting about 2
months, and have yet to try all the varieties. i usually like kenyan and
ethiopian, but i want to branch out (and apparently kenya isn't in season)
so it's onesies and twosies for now. though i have already had a couple
coffees i like sell out (knew the kona would, didn't expect that the
guatemala blue quetzal would no longer be available ina 5# bag!) and it's
tough to go through a pound anyway with freshroast, though i'm working on
the wife to remedy the small roaster situation ;)

Der Alte jumps gun again, rings rong doorbell...
You know, according to CSA rules, quantities less than 5# don't count in
your "stash."
That means I only got Panama, Mexico Chiapas, Ethiopia, Sumatra and some
other SA beans. I'm not really lacking anything, but I knew the automation
part of coffee fulfillment was busted. Otherwise, it would have detected the
out of balance stash situation at this trailer space and sent Fivers to
reestablish equilibrium.
Then Yours Truly would be confused. Left handed, cross wired and brain
damaged incipient ADHD Autistic can't deal with Normal or Balance.
I'd be happy being the SM janitor...

A heat gun is quite inexpensive and it's pure Zen. A great learning
experience.
With the right metal bowl, you should have no problem doing 1 pound roasts,
if you want.

Hey, that was one of my college jobs - moving the chairs around and sweeping
up things others didn't want to deal with served me well in the business
world - and now, in semi-retirement, those skills please my wife
enormously!
5 lb min, eh? I'm a two-fer guy so no more worries about the stash -
thanks!

Yes, i actually did a lot of thought about this over the weekend and have
decided my next foray into roasting will be HG/DB. Now i have to find a
good cheap dog bowl. I would by cheap stainless steel pots but they are the
wrong shape and look unstable. I was thinking maybe a SS colander would
work too.
I have to look for suggestions regarding cold weather roasting though. It's
typically below freezing now.

Floyd,
About the easiest way to roast in cold weather is to modify a cardboard box
just enough that you can get the heat gun in there and see the beans.... It
also insulates the SS container a bit from the cold. Try to plug the HG
directly into an outlet, rather than using an extension cord, since the cord
will rob a bit of the power, and you will want all the power available for
roasting in the cold. Of course, there is a BIG difference between below
FREEZING and below ZERO.
