Topic: Sweet Maria GC Drum sales? (26 msgs / 881 lines)

Does SM Sell replacement drums for the Gene Cafe? I couldn't find it
on their website. My GC is out of commission b/c I lost the rubber
stopper on the swing door that prevents the door from smashing into
the glass drum. I've switched to tea (loose leaf) b/c I can't handle
the "gourmet" coffee that my wife bought. Tastes like burnt rubber.
A hot swappable drum would be great.

Have you checked with the guy that repairs the Gene. I would think he might
have something. SM's should be able to give you the info to get in touch
with him.

"Hot Swappable" is not good. I have memories of pulling 6-foot thermocouple=

Just a note about Gene Cafe Service - I had to send my Gene Cafe back to the
distributor for repairs. Since I live in Charlotte, NC I was expecting a
two to three week turnaround. To my great surprise it was home, from it's
visit to Park City Utah, within seven days. Great service - fast service.

I know how you guys feel. I remember when I blew my first popcorn pumper,
and had to make the 10 minute trek down to the thrift store to buy another
one. Put me back another three bucks too....

I'm so happy for you, Brett - keep on poppin'.
Thanks for the feedback on Gene Cafe service, guys - it's good to know.
Mine has been running with no problems for 4 months now - it gets fairly
light service at about 3 lb. a week, 6 loads, very consistent results.

I hate to rain on the GC parade here, but we've been hearing of a lot of
failures with this unit so far. Granted they have been good at
repairing them, customer service, etc etc. but still, the mortality rate
for these seem awfully high. One wold have thought R&D would have
tested it a bit more before releasing it to the general public... or is
this another Apple III escapade where the rush to get something to
market over rode common sense and we gots ourselves a general lemon.
Also fwiw, these things also seem awfully easy to 'mess up' / 'break' /
than say a hot top for example. a bit too tempermental for my tastes.
Billy bob lets a filter get dirty and turns his GC into starbucks fodder.
Silly suzy pushes the tumbler in wrong, breaks off the widget and it
wont turn now.
not to mention there seems to be a lot of pieces and partses to get lost
/ torn / stretched etc etc and also kill the unit.
Maybe i aught ta let me cousins pork sword and cleetus play with one see
what thay kin do ta its. Hey y'all watch this!!

I have tortured my Gene Cafe since I have had it. In under 6 months, I have
put 274 batches through it and just a smidgen shy of 145 pounds. I don't
let it rest or cool between batches; maybe that's better for it. There have
been days when I have made it roast for six to eight hours straight with no
rest; again, maybe this is better for it. I do not baby mine, but I am not
afraid of breaking it either; that will tell me more about quality of the
product and its weaknesses. Some of the problems with this roaster have
been defects, but some of the problems are attributable to the operators and
they have readily admitted such. Thus far, the Gene Cafe remains a trouble
free, work horse for me.
If I want a bright roast, I can get that. If I want a deep toned roast with
body I can get that. If there is one thing that can definitely be said
about this roaster is that it can be very consistent once you have dialed in
on a roast that you like.
I do hear HG/DB calling unto me, but I already have painful conditions in my
right arm ... sigh. While there are some remaining thrift stores in the
area, it will be years before they have the inventory of which others speak.

Eddie,
I have a HG set-up that allows the heatgun to all but run itself:
I use this campfire tripod:http://www.sciplus.com/singleItem.cfm?terms)83&cartLogFrom=SearchI HAD to do something, since my heatgun is a beast weighing nearly 4 pounds,">http://www.amazon.com/Texsport-Campfire-Tripod/dp/B0000B13JA/sr=8-2/qid71422319/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/002-0538102-7321606?ieF8&s=sporting-goodsto suspend my heatgun with this contraption:http://www.sciplus.com/singleItem.cfm?terms)83&cartLogFrom=SearchI HAD to do something, since my heatgun is a beast weighing nearly 4 pounds,
and this combination has worked like a charm! The heatgun can be raised or
lowered easily, and stays there until you want it at a different height.

I can't blame this issue on the Gene Cafe or it's design. I simply
lost a rubber stopper that prevents the swing door from slamming into
the glass. I probably wasn't paying enough attention when I was
washing out the drum and lost the stopper down the drain or something.
I've found the GC to be very sturdy other than this incident. It's a
good machine. The root cause of this issue is user error.

Brian et al,
I have taken note of past posts with respect to these modifications to the
HG/DB method. The reason I have considered the HG/DB method is strictly for
the "intimacy" factor with the roast. Does this type of setup detract from
the "intimacy"? I invite the the written perspectives of all.

Eddie, I agree with you. I love my Gene also. I haven't counted the roasts
I have with it. But I know I have roasted at least 3 or more pounds a week
since Nov. I have done back to back roasts and have not had any problems. It
is just super easy to use and don't have to worry about replacing filters
and cleaning that often. I just started the HG method to have a back up and
maybe to do a little more at a time.

Eddie,
Absolutely not, there is all the intimacy of the roast, unless your intimacy
demands include wrist strain. All the tripod and hanger do is hang the heat
gun above the dog bowl. You still need to move the head gun around during
the roast, but that is very easy to do, since the head gun is suspended from
the tripod. You also move the heat gun up and down, either farther from the
beans or closer to the beans; again, that is very easy to do, since the
"Italian hanging cord" is "augmented by an adjustable spring-loaded line so
that the light or tool being powered will hover just where it is needed...".
In my case, I think a convenient way of suspending the heat gun adds to the
intimacy, since I am able to concentrate much more on where the heat gun is,
rather than having to hold it there.
Of course, all the handy guys on this list would be able to devise a much
more elegant suspension method (and then describe it in 100 words, of which
I would understand 10, maybe 15) , but this set-up was pretty good going for
me....

If the GC is designed to handle "back-to-back" roasts without any rest then
I'm impressed. Having owned a couple of Alpenrosts, with my first one I
knew it wasn't really designed for back-to-backs, but I did them anyway and
would "crow" about being able to do it. That decision brought my 1st Alp to
an earlier grave in about a year of use. So, with the 2nd one, I followed
the suggestion to force just the cool-down cycle between roasts which seems
to have been a good practice for that product.
Just make sure that down the road you're not accelerating the death of your
roaster like I did.

Eddie, I agree with you. I love my Gene also. I haven't counted the roasts
I have with it. But I know I have roasted at least 3 or more pounds a week
since Nov. I have done back to back roasts and have not had any problems.
It is just super easy to use and don't have to worry about replacing filters
and cleaning that often. I just started the HG method to have a back up
and maybe to do a little more at a time.

The digital hot top will do continuous roasts also. I have been using it for
2 years and do four roasts back to back about every 10 days. the roaster
still performs as it did on the first day I used it. Perfectly

Didn't know that about the HotTop either...anyone want to swap a GC or HT
for a slightly used Alp? I hear they may be collector's items in about
100yrs.
:^)

Doesn't the Hottop have a mandatory cooling cycle for the roaster while the
beans are cooling?

That Is The Only Purpose of the Thermal Fuse- to deter the machine's use in
any application beyond "amateur," or sub connoisseur level.
In other words, User Operated roasting only, and they'll gouge you to
replace the fuse or component that contains it. The early grave was a shame.
Disinter the thing and replace the fuse. An Achilles' Heel by design! They
make copper ones that handle the heat much better.
The caveat would be- the next weakest links would start to fail. The actual
failures might become spectacular so you absolutely couldn't abandon it
while it's roasting. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to install a New
Improved Fth, 'cause I know I would git a whuppin' and be living under a
bridge if I set the place on fire- my responsibility!

Yes, that was the usual culprit on Alps. I had already been infected by the
desire to get into gas-grill roasting and took that opportunity to convert
the Alp's drum for grill use. So, I'm still getting some good mileage
(weekly) from at least one part of that dead Alp.
