I was lucky enough to pick up a reconditioned Rocky Doser grinder
(wanted Doserless but can't be too picky) for a good price on ebay
last night. I promise to heed the warnings of Vicki's desperately
unfortunate experience and try to be much more careful than I usually
am.
My next step was to order the Gaggia Espresso plus tamper, 12 oz. pitcher, =
etc.
My question is what coffee should I try first? This is my first
experience with a non-toy espresso machine and I've been reading
everything I can get my hands on but I know that what I really need is
experience pulling shots. I have lots of home-roasted (via bread
machine and heat gun) beans to pick from Sumatra (have Classic but
am waiting for a SM shipment of Blue), Monkey Blend, Italian Espresso,
and scads and scads more. Should I stick with the typical espresso
blends or pick a single variety? I know eventually I'll be trying
everything but for this first learning phase does it matter what I
use?
I'd like to mention that I was so happy to get this grinder. Because
of my budget I was all set to get the Gaggia MDF which probably would
have been okay. But I was able to get the Rocky for only around $35
more. This increase I was able to talk myself into.
My husband's birthday and mine are only two days apart (in March) so
this is our birthday present to ourselves. We usually try to buy one
thing (electronics typically) that the both of us want. We're both
gadget hounds, although I'm the handyman I mean handyperson :) I'll
be the one who uses it the most. Good guy, my husband is.
So, what beans should I try first I need to start roasting 'cause I
think I'm going to need a bunch! Oh, we'll probably be doing a mix of
espresso and cappuccino.
