Michael,
I'm far from expert, but a couple of general things I think I have learned:
1. Take it pretty fast through the initial stages, so that the beans are
starting to turn dark around 4-5 mins
2. (From miKe) the meaningful timing starts at the beginning of first crack
3. Especially on light roasts, feather it from the beginning of first crack.
"Coast" is the word that Les and others use.
