Considering roast results only (ignoring batch size), would you rather have
a properly instrumented electric such as a highly modded hottop, SC/TO,
etc., or an RK drum setup, possible with PID gas control?
As background, I have been roasting for 7 years. I spent the last 12 months
using the HG/DB method, while thinking about what roaster to purchase. The
HG/DB has been very educational. I now realize that none of the <$1000
off-the-shelf options seem right to me, they all have issues that I would
need to correct. I canít seem to find a compelling direction to head in,
but I know I donít want to go through another winter doing what Iím doing
now. I need some advice.
My gut feel is to go with an RK drum setup. Iím also thinking of
computerizing the temp control to better deal with cold or windy weather,
and having remote temperature so that I can limit the time outdoors when ití
s really cold. I currently roast two Ĺ lb batches per week for family
