Topic: Pregnant (yay!) and off coffee (alas!) (20 msgs / 754 lines)
1) From: Kris McN
Well, I'm going to have to live vicariously through you guys for now. I'm 8
weeks pregnant and have developed a complete aversion to coffee. The smells
have just become overwhelming. I knew something was up when I did my weekly
roasting last weekend. At one point while roasting some Congo Kivu
Peaberry, there was a burst of cedar smelling smoke so strong I almost lost
it. Then, a couple of days later, I went to have my morning cuppa (this
time some Sidamo), but there was just too much going on smell-wise (and
therefor taste-wise). Had to put it down and back away slowly. When I was
pregnant with my first, at about this same time in the process, I suddenly
felt like I could smell fleas on a dog at 50 feet. Couldn't walk past the
local bakery in the morning because the smell of yeast was too strong. I
didn't have this problem with coffee last time, but I wasn't drinking home
roast back then either. Seems like all the things that make home-roast so
delightful are making it too much to take at the moment. This super smell
thing lasted my whole pregnancy last time, though it wasn't this strong,
hopefully this time it will be short lived.
*sigh*
Sitting here with my cup of tea jealously reading all the descriptions of
wonderful cups.

Kris,
Congratulations!
As for the coffee thing, my wife was exactly the same -- I think her
aversion to coffee showed up even before the test showed positive. It was
that strong. FWIW, Our daughter is now 14 months old and my wife back to
her old-coffee-drinking-self :-)
Grace and Peace,
  `tim

It's a good thing, cause caffeine may not be all that good for the wee
ones. I'd like to think this is your body telling you exactly that - dial
back the coffee for a bit ;) My wife was so happy to end the breastfeeding
so that she could get back to her daily espresso and milk drinks!

Pregnancy was when I discovered "decaf" didn't need to be Sanka or
Tasteless Choice--and found my first local roastery. OTOH, I couldn't
go near liver, or uni (sea urchin) sushi. The aversion to liver was
temporary (alas, I love it fried and smothered in onions and bacon)
but 22 years later, uni is the only sushi I can't abide.

On all 4 pregnancies we had. We knew long before the test. Two things =
happened. My wife would get up one morning and open the refrigerator and =

fridge with Arm and Hammer every few days. The second was even more =

start laying next to my wife. She stayed there until the baby was born. =
Then she slept under the crib for a few months and then finally she =

I was the same way when I was pregnant - couldn't stand the smell of
coffee, let alone the taste. I had to move the office coffee far, far
away from me.
Congratulations to you, btw!

Congrats, Kris! That's wonderful!!
During my last pregnancy I had near-constant cravings for black bean sauce.
Led me to learn how to make it myself. Smells drove me nuts during all four
of mine, too.
In no time at all you'll be back to loving (and being able to drink) coffee.
Guess your body (or your baby?) is telling you to keep away from the
potentially harmful caffeine.

Kris - I hear you with the sniffer - my husband has started to sing the
theme from the bloodhound gang every time I say "do you smell that?" I'm
lucky I haven't been put off coffee, so I've been happily drinking half and
half for the last several weeks. Hopefully, it won't last and you can start
roasting some of Tom's decafs. I really like the Mexican Oaxaca and the
Costa Rican Tres Rios.

Best wishes on that new baby and sorry to hear about the coffee. When my
daughter was pregnant with her first, she had some pretty funny stuff with
foods and cravings. I still remember trying to find Gummy Bears for her in
the pantry at 10pm one night. That was with her nervously tapping my
shoulder every 5 seconds saying "you found them yet"? There were none and
when I looked at my son-in-law we both said "road trip" at the same time.
Hope you get back to enjoying you're coffee as soon as possible.

D'oh! Forgot to congratulate you, Kris!
Meanwhile, the cravings I had while pregnant were dark chocolate and
sushi nori (sheets of dried seaweed).

Thanks to everyone for the regards and sympathy/empathy. I'm still gonna
eyeball the greens list on a regular basis to keep my stash enriched. I
don't want to miss something good just because I can't drink it!
Keep the detailed descriptions of the delicious cups coming! I need
somekind of fix.

Kris,
Congratulations and condolences! (Apply as needed).
Research seems to indicate that the sensitivity and morning sickness
are adaptations to keep you from ingesting anything that might harm
the fetus at its most vulnerable. Hopefully the aversions will pass
soon. If not, well, that will give you *two* things to look forward to.

"...I love it fried and smothered in onions and bacon"
Hello!
As a kid, I got exactly that, with Aunts, Uncles and cousins on farms in
Illinois and Iowa. Fresh peas in the pod are sweet, too.
I remember the abomination of "plastic fresh wrapped" packages of putrid
liver, fish or produce that were almost equalled by the tins of preground
coffee, almost as low on the food chain as the other rot.
Bill Boyer of Boyer's coffee in Denver introduced me to a Melitta AromaRoast
and a few pounds of Kenya AA green about 30 years ago. I roasted in my shop
and attracted everybody else in the [Gardner- Denver] building, and they
appreciated my big restaurant drip brewer.
The flavors were a hint of what I'm getting now in the ROster Oster Bread
machine with a heat gun. "Fresh" is back in the vocabulary. Definitely.

Congrats, Kris. I know about the smell thing. In my normal life, I
can smell a piece of chocolate candy in someon's pocket more than 10
feet away. Not much of an advantage for a nurse who is exposed to all
kinds of smells. When I was pregnant, I couldn't stand the smell or
taste of tacos which I ordinarily love...until the night I went into
labor and then had a craving for them! I couldn't do lemonade either,
not from smell, but the heartburn was intolerable. Never have had
heartburn since.
Take care,
Ann
