Topic: Dosing by volume versus weight checkup revisited (2 msgs / 98 lines)

Checked my notes and hadn't done a PF build consistency check since 10/05.
Had about a 0.5g variance build to build back then over 6 builds.
Since I just replaced the fan motors in two (of three) Rostos decided to do
a double roast to fully check them out under roasting conditions using one
for each roast. Basically just made up a fast profile 8min to 450f and went
for it, cooled 'em, dumped 'em in the other Rosto and repeated. After the
first "roast" even though temp would be normal for my FC normal 11 to 13min
profile, looked to be lucky if roasted to cinnamon, but after second speed
roast right on the money with grind color matching bean surface color.
Then did a series of six PF builds through tamp, carefully removing built
basket, weighing each and subtracting the 27.3gr the empty LM double basket
weighed. (Using an Acculab CRD-150, max 150g, 0.1g resolution).
First three builds weighed in at 18.0g, 17.9g, 17.9g so threw in a finger
role for number four build during Stockfleth for overdose yielding 18.5g,
back to standard build 18.0g, and finger role Stockfleth again 18.6g and
quit. Dang, guess got lucky and did better than last time when I had 0.5g
variance now only 0.1g! (wasn't trying for overdose back then). Interesting
how you can tell if overdosed by feel during the post distribution/level
tamp.
Only actually pulled a shot with the final build since the beans were just
roasted and I have a bit of a head cold! But I'll keep the second half of
the roast to see how the double speed roast actually turned out in a few
days. For the record even WP Yirg' (as opposed to DP) which smelled WOW
during roast and excellent bright post roast munch four days ago was a bland
Americano today.
Oh, it wasn't a full out speed roast or it would have been more like 5
minutes instead of 8 minutes to 450f:-)
