We got discounted granite tiles - the first time was at a fantastic, local
place, the kind that received different types of shipments - when they ran
out, it was gone.
The second time was in Arizona - no simiilar bargain spots, but we found
granite tiles on sale at Home Depot.
The trick to using tiles is to make sure that the grout is level to the
tiles. First time we didn't do that, and food would get stuck in between,
but the second time (second house), we made sure we did it right.
I would never spend that much for a kitchen - heck, I never could, because
of limited finances (leaves more money for my coffee roasting habit, too!).
We had a bargain source for cabinets, too, but if I didn't, I'd look for
good quality cabinets that someone else didn't want maybe refinish or paint
them. Also, to me, actually furniture looks beautiful recycled as cabinets
(people do a lot of that w/bathrooms now). I've done a lot with painted
accents in the past...
