Anyone who's used acid (citric) to descale their espresso machine knows when
removing the acid bath it'll come out a greenish tint. Seems Miss Bricoletta
is having a bad trip, something about the World being invaded by green
Mermaids... Unfortunately will have to let her suffer another half hour or
so.
Hmmm, I wonder how many lemons you'd have to squeeze to get a gallon of
lemon juice? I wonder what those lemons would cost compared to 8Tbs food
grade citric acid (which costs about a buck)? I wonder how long it would
take to squeeze enough lemons for a gallon of lemon juice versus measuring
8Tbs citric acid and mixing it with a gallon of water! But sure, lemon juice
would likely work. Vinegar? Not inside my espresso machine! Oh, and we're
talking descaling not cleaning, different process.

For those that don't live in Florida or California current price at Safeway
for 1 lemon is $0.79 but only $3.49 for two pound bag. $2.52 for 15oz
Safeway brand bottle lemon juice but only $3.58 for 32oz Realemon Lemon
Juice so the better buy. Cheapest gallon white vinegar $2.79. What was that
again for 8Tbs citric acid from a Brewers' supply to mix with a gallon
water, 'bout a buck. Indeed the marvelous of modern marketing.
Beyond that what's the correct dilution (if it should be diluted) for
straight lemon juice or vinegar when used as preventative descaler? I
certainly don't know and why bother researching lemon juice or vinegar
acidity when others already have for cheap citric acid usage. (BTW, fresh
squeezed lemon juice wouldn't be "concentrated", it would be the real deal
actual unadulterated lemon juice.)
Obviously anyone is free to use whatever they choose. Be it Urnex Dezcal
(specifically for preventative descaling, main active ingredient citric
acid), straight citric acid, lemon juice or vinegar I don't really care.
I'll use citric acid because it's cheaper than Dezcal and recommended by
many people with many years experience with high end prosumer and commercial
espresso machines.

Urnex Cleancaf (aka Starbucks Barista coffee machine cleaner) is
essentially citric acid. You pay a heckuva price just for the
convenience of premeasured packets or a fancy plastic canister.

Be careful if using Urnex Cleancaf for HX machine boiler preventative
descaling. Can't speak about the *$ coffee machine cleaner but Urnex
Cleancaf is a mild descaler AND detergent. If you don't flush the boiler
copiously (even more than needed with straight descaling agent) you'll end
up with a bit-o-bubbly steaming for a spell! ;-) Besides Urnex Cleancaf
costing more than even Urnex Dezcal, Dezcal is a more aggressive descaler,
so why use Cleancaf for straight descaling needs?

Bric' fully descaler flushed and coming up to stabilized operating temp...

Personal preference based on it not cleaning as well as Cleancaf and tougher
to completely flush residual taste from boiler and going by recommendation
not to use from other's more experience than I.

Quick Googling will find Bulkfoods.com 1# citric acid online $4.79 plus s/h
totaling about $13 (enough for 4 or 5 preventative descalings) but 5# only
$5.50 plus s/h totaling about $15 (enough for 20 to 30 preventative
descalings!). Buying 5# online would have been cheaper in the long run than
through local Brewers' supply but I didn't want to wait so bought a pound
locally last August. Oh, if you buy $50 worth of "stuff" no shipping charge
but still the fixed $4.95 per order packing fee.
