This all started last Monday by the first day of Passover. My family =
experience an Exodus Which ended one hour ago. My daughter has been =
married to a Shiite Muslim in Malaysia who is also a Knight of The realm =
and works for one of the Princes. She has been married to him for over =
16 years and they have a 13 year old son. They have been bringing the =
son up as a Shiite Muslim. Last month her husband came home and =
announced that he has married another woman (he is allowed 2 wives) and =
has divorced her (which he is allowed to do without consulting her). She =
contacted a lawyer and brought suit to keep there house, son and for =
alimony and child support . All of which is her right. The lawyer =
assured her that she would win and could continue to live in the house =
etc. Her ex-husband then sold her house from under her. The house was in =
his name since as a non-citizen she is not allowed to own real property =
in Malaysia. Then he counter -sued her for my grandson. His counter suit =
was that she has Jewish roots and the boy would not be brought up as a =
Muslim if the court gave her guardianship. The lawyer then told her he =
didn't know she was Jewish and there was no way a Malaysian court was =
going to rule in her favor. She contacted the American Embassy and they =
told her they could not aid her in the commission of a kidnapping in a =
sovereign nation. But if she took her son to another country and showed =
up at the American Embassy. they would be able to protect them and get =
them back to the States. She drove to the airport with her son in her =
husbands $150,000 Mercedes (Malaysia has a 100% luxury car import duty) =
left the car in the airport parking lot with the keys in the ignition. =
As of 2 days ago they were in another country than Malaysia and in the =
American Embassy. They were forced to flee with only the clothes on =
their backs. As of one hour ago they are safe Again The USA. Thanks =
Brett for your prayers.

Oh, Barry -
This puts my current troubles in perspective! I will also pray for your
daughter & grandson... This has indeed been quite a Passover for them, and
for you also.
Please keep us posted... praying for the best for them.
It is sad to know that such antisemitism really IS alive, unfortunately - I
must admit that I didn't realize that it was like that in Malaysia - and
it's one more place where women don't have any rights.

so instead of him kidnapping the son, she did? its nice that the US helped,
but why couldnt an embassy in one country help but not another? i thought
its all US ground. where was the son born? if abroad, he doesnt have
immediate rights as a US citizen, does he?

best wishes to your family, sounds like a mess.

I would guess that the US Embassy in Malaysia could have kept them
safe but de facto hostages in the embassy. Also, since the child had
"connections" to one of the Princes, there might have been more of an
incident created locally by it if the Embassy had attempted to get
them out of the county. By getting the boy to another country first,
it removed all those issues.

It's sha'aria, or Muslim law. Disgusting and anti-Semitic, but legal
in a country like Malaysia. This is one more reason to cherish our
Constitutional separation of church and state, and fear and abhor
theocracy of whatever religion a government officially enforces.

but how does separation of church and state exist when our motto is in God

Barry,
Of course it's somewhat ironic your asking for our prayers, given that
it's the evils of religion that created this mess in the first place. I
don't know how many Muslims subscribe to this list, but it's likely they
would be praying for a different outcome than you would. And wouldn't
they and you be praying to the same god for intervention? If so, how is
that god going to decide what to do?

Leo,
We still, IMHO, sometimes honor that separation more in the breach--
but by and large, we do not have an official government religion, and
one can't be arrested for eating a cheeseburger (or shrimp cocktail
or BLT), or transacting business on the Sabbath. No U.S.
governmental unit at any level can order us to kneel and pray in any
religion or wear or display religious symbols of any faith (or forbid
us from doing so on non-governmental-property). No state can refuse
to recognize the divorce of a Jewish couple for failure to obtain a
"get" or one of a Catholic couple because they did not obtain an
ecclesiastical annulment. No U.S. governmental unit at any level can
confer or deny baptism or officially declare who is and who is not a
Christian, a Muslim, or a Jew. And the Supreme Court finally
recognized in the 1960s that blue laws (i.e., mandatory Sunday store
closings) and prayer in the public schools ARE unconstitutional--
leading to the discontinuation of both practices. There's a big
difference between the mention of G-d on our currency and in the
Pledge of Allegiance (both of which make me uncomfortable though I am
a believing monotheist) and a theocracy. (And for the record, even
though I am Jewish, Israel's governmental enforcement of Sabbath and
Kashrut religious laws--and discrimination against non-Orthodox
congregations--disturbs me too; one of the reasons I consider myself
an American first and choose to live here and not there).

I wasn't asking for prayers. I thanked Brett for praying. He had said he
would do that when I said I had an undisclosed family emergency last week.
As far as I am concerned this thread is neither about religion, prayer, or
politics. just a family emergency which turned out good.

In addition, the way it started was I had a family emergency and if all
turned out well I Would attend PNWG on Fathers' Day weekend. Because, as can
be revealed now, my daughter and grandson are in Portland I haven't seen
either for 5 years.

I don't suppose you've seen the movie _Bruce Almighty_?
Some of those quandaries are dealt with (rather well, in my opinion) there.

IMO there are no sides here, no right and wrong; just the opportunity
to support a friend and fellow home roaster in a time of crisis. Consider
reaching out to Barry and saving the theoretical discussions
for another time and place!
Barry, so glad to hear your family members are safe. All the best to you and
to them, and hoping that even from these troubling events there will be much
good to come...

Some of us may be old enough to remember when the phrase "under God" was
inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance. Wasn't in the original...
In God we trust: perhaps it means that those who believe trust God to
help run our secular state morally and ethically.

Barry,
I am glad to hear how things are coming along for your family. I can't
imagine the worry and concern you must have for your daughter and grandson.
I know you were sharing a family concern and not trying to initiate a
political and religious discusssion. Thanks for sharing this and know that
my thoughts are with you and your family.

Barry,
Indeed great news. Primarily that your daughter and grandson are safe, and
also you'll now likely be able to attend PNWG V. Look forward to seeing you
again! (Sorry about planning a Luau dinner but didn't think you'd be able to
make it this year.;-)

Barry,
I'm happy that yours turned out well, but I have seen many
docu-dramas concerning the abduction, on American soil, of children
by their Muslim fathers. I actually know an American woman who,
although divorced from her Muslim husband, is constantly looking over
her shoulder in regards to their daughter...
Although, to be fair, it happens quite a bit between totally American
couples...

No problem. That was the idea of my daughter getting refugee status. Now if
my grandsons passport shows up at any port of embarkation. The immigration
computer will light up like a Christmas tree. I am so proud a member of my
family is on the no fly list.

Barry,
There are times that call for decisivness, and your daughter wasn't afraid
to act.
Congtratulaions for having raised a brave & cool-headed woman.

I've been away from email for about a week and missed all tis till
tonight.
Barry, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. What a
trauma. I imagine it will be a difficult transition for both your
daughter and grandson. I don't know where you live, but it would be
worth seeing if there are people who specialize in helping kids in
this kind of situation. Its a tough age in general, and with the
family crisis as well as the change in culture, this could be very
important. Forgive me for "intruding" if I am. I am a Marriage and
Family Therapist and have worked with kids in somewhat similar
situations in the past.
Good luck to all of you.
Peace,
Barbara

Barry,
No doubt in my mind that being able to see life from two diametrically
opposed perspectives, and given the wisdom, influence and leadership
of his well respected grandfather, he will grow into a solid man,
worthy of respect.
Respectfully,
Eddie

Poor guy. But, in my experience, kids are made of rubber, and bounce
back really well. Give him plenty of emotional support, but also the
room he needs to be himself, and he will thrive here.
Best of luck to them.
