Topic: Simon's in Cambridge was +SM Liquid Amber is WONDERFUL! (4 msgs / 408 lines)

Today was to be the day. After months, I was finally going to get to =
Simon's in
Cambridge (MA). First I skipped caffeine. Then right through lunch I =
was
envisioning one great shot of espresso after another, with a cappa thrown=
 in
here & there. So after lunch in nearby Davis Square with my wife & =
daughter, we
temporarily went our separate ways. They went shopping & I went for =
espresso.
So I get a great parking space, just one store away. But, uh oh, there's=
 a
funny sign in the window. From the distance I could only read one word =
"sorry".
Suddenly I wasn't feeling so well. When I reached the front of Simon's I=
 could
read the sign ... the entire building was without power, but Simon's =
would
re-open in the afternoon. But it was already afternoon. So after =
hanging
around reading in my car for 30 minutes I overheard the owner of the =
video store
next door say it was going to be another 2-3 hours before the building =
had
power. No espresso for me today ):). Is Simon's ever going to happen =
for me???
So now I'm finally drinking some coffee ... 12 day old Sumatra Classic
Mandheling ... it's well past its prime. Tomorrow we get the 'noreaster.
Hopefully, we'll have power so I can roast some more beans!
I hope everybody is having a great weekend!

Don't worry Dave, the weather people are hedging as usual. Its only going
to rain... I think.

I just got back from having a great Italian dinner including a TERRIFIC
ESPRESSO! We ate at Ristorante Gemelli on Moody Street in Waltham for =
the first
time. I had Veal & Eggplant Parm & my wife had Shrimp Scampi ... both
delicious. While she was ordering from the dessert menu (a terrific =
tiramisu) I
noticed the coffee section of the dessert menu was not at all typical of =
any
restaurant I can recall; specific SO coffees for both espresso & =
non-espresso,
with detailed descriptions of flavor. The caf. non-espresso was a Guat.
Huehuetenango, the caf. espresso a Brazil Daterra. Decaf both espresso &
non-espresso was a Costa Rica La Lapa. Generally, I no longer order =
coffee of
any kind in a restaurant, but the description of the decaf espresso =
sounded so
good, and said absolutely no harshness, that I had a good feeling, so I =
ordered
some.
This was the best shot of espresso I've ever had by far (& it was =
decaf!)!!!
Sweet, great dark chocolate & other flavors ... & it just lingered. Not =
even a
hint of a bad flavor. It put a smile on my face! My wife thought =
something was
wrong when I just sat there savoring the lingering flavor, not even =
trying her
tiramisu!
I've gotta learn how to pull a shot like that ... & get back to that =
restaurant!

4) From: David Morgenlender
It's finally happened ... I made it into Simon's today (after a nice =
Mexican
lunch at Forest Cafe a couple of blocks away)! I had a very enjoyable =
time
there. My wife even joined me & had a good relaxing time ... she's =
definitely a
non-coffee person, but greatly enjoyed her peppermint hot chocolate (it =
was VERY
good).
I started with a house blend espresso. It's a darker roast, and =
therefore more
bitter, than I usually go for. But after it cooled slightly it was very =
nice,
and the bitter became more like a bittersweet chocolate.
Then I had an espresso with Terroir Southern Italian Espresso Blend. =
This was
very good.
Unfortunately, they did not have any other beans available for espresso =
as they
usually do, pending delivery tomorrow. So I decided to try different =
drink;
Simon discouraged me from trying a ristretto or lungo because they would =
be too
bitter with the beans they had available. Chris suggested an espresso =
romano,
which is espresso pulled into a cup containing lemon peel. I had never =
had one,
so I went with one using the S. Ital. blend. It wasn't at all as I =
expected,
but absolutely delicious. The aroma was overwhelmingly lemon. I =
expected the
flavor to be the espresso plus lemon; instead the lemon totally changed =
the
flavor of the espresso; it was a bright lemony drink, at times tasting =
like
some milk chocolate with lemon. I wouldn't always drink this since it =
hides
some of the bean flavor; but it's so good I do intend to drink it a lot!=

Finally, I decided to finish with a decaf cappa; a very good cappa, =
although I
actually enjoyed the espressos more, which is unusual for me! BTW, the
chocolate covered raspberry & almond cookie was also quite good! :)
As an added bonus the hot chocolate & cappa came with latte art ... the =
first
I've seen other than in photos. A very nice touch.
Everybody there was very friendly. The place has the feel of a =
neighborhood
cafe. There were 4 people behind the bar ... Simon, Chris & 2 other =
baristas
whose names I didn't get a chance to get. My wife said we were lucky =
Simon's
isn't close to our house, because I'd spend too much money there ... I =
wouldn't
say too much, but it would be a lot! :) Now I have to get back there =
soon!
