originally, we did this on list but it got out of hand very quickly.
a sm customer had a solution which was a separate buy-sell-trade list
that is still out there (but i can't find the link). but basically it
filled up with junky postings and was of little use. by that time
everyone was using ebay and that seemed like the best way to put
something out there. that's the brief history of selling on the list.
and yes, if you really want to and you clear it with derek or maria,
it is fine to do so ---

People have on rare occasions offered things for sale on the list,
but generally they first check by sending an email directly to Tom or
Maria to make sure that it's ok to offer a particular item. So, if I
understand correctly, offering an item or two for sale is not
strictly verboten, but it is closely regulated.
