Topic: Flashing for the RK (10 msgs / 443 lines)
1) From: neal prentiss
Hi everyone,
I just bought some rolled aluminum flashing to install in my RK, but then I
read somewhere that a thin sheet of aluminum might not hold up very well in
a hot bbq. If the aluminum doesn't work, then what does everyone else use?
Thanks in advance.
Neal

Neal,
I've had the flashing inside my RK equipped BBQ for 5 months now and =
have roasted approx 250 lbs. So far, I have not seen any degradation of =
the flashing.

3) From: Ken Mary
I recently found a possible hazard when using aluminum flashing in a very
hot environment. There was no problem over several years with my drum made
from flashing at normal roasting temperatures. But I used a piece as heat
shielding at an unknown higher temperature and it appears to have a
protective coating. That coating turned dark brown with plenty of smoke
until the coating was pyrolysed. The metal is undamaged.

As Ken says, in "normal" operation it should not be a problem. I
used flashed at some point for some r&d work and got it too close to
the heat source. I ended up with melted warped aluminum. But again,
in normal roasting temperatures, it should be fine.

I was thinking of flashing the RK drum. So I went out early, in just my
bathrobe and slippers. I hope the neighbors weren't watching.... I flashed
the drum. Nothing happened...
I don't get it. Is it supposed to heat up faster, or agitate the beans
more?
This is so confusing...

Brett,
You may not have "flashed properly". You would need to climb up over the
grill, bow your body into an arch, reach over with one hand and light the
burners and then hold until you've burned off all the manufacturing oils.

Hi everyone,
I just bought some rolled aluminum flashing to install in my RK, but then I
read somewhere that a thin sheet of aluminum might not hold up very well in
a hot bbq. If the aluminum doesn't work, then what does everyone else use?
Thanks in advance.

Neal,
I guess you can't believe everything you read somewhere. Most BBQ =
grills nowdays are made of thin aluminum, you don't have to worry about =
it holding up. You don't need anything fancy, just get a piece of alum =
from the hardware store that will cover the footprint of the drum, all =
you are really trying to do is keep any direct flame from causing a hot =
spot on the drum. Unless you are trying to add mass to a low BTU flimsy =
grill then get a piece of iron or something. I think a roll of alum is =
overkill, they sell small rectangular sheets that's all you need.
Good Luck,
Ross
