I'm sure you will be advised by others, but it is a violation of the
list rules to post competitors to Sweet Maria's. Tom and Maria work
hard for us - and their service goes far beyond selling beans.
Welcome to the group.
yes its true, and this seems like a very direct SPAM of the group
with commercial solictation, but I am pretty sure Dwight just didn't
realize it, and didnt mean to...
On the other hand, I DO cup all the Jamaicans and I personally still
cannot recommend any. They simply do NOT have the character that used
to make them distinguishable or unique. Some are downright BAD,
cabbage-like in particular. If you came here to the shop, I could
line up 3 Mexican Oaxacas or even the inferior Coatepec and put in 3
Jamaicans and you would pick the Mexicans at $4-$5/lb as superior cup
quality before you chose a JBM at $17-$24/lb or more. I guarantee it.
I did have a report of a decent lot of Mavis Bank a couple weeks ago
that I couldnt get a sample of before it was gone. But everything I
have sampled has been very pathetic.
On a very related note, as an educational experience I have picked up
a bag of Vietnam Robusta, so any home roaster who wants to taste the
worst case scenario for the future of coffee in the US can do so.
It's going to set you back about .75 per lb, and it will just be for
a lark, basically. I recommend a try, just for the experience! It
will make you appreciate all your other coffee!
