Hi, all.  I have a home in Costa Rica, in Manuel Antonio, near 
Quepos.  I am there about 2 to 3 months a year, depending on how my 
work schedule works out.
Anyway, I have wanted to get into home roasting for a long time, but 
always had an excuse for not doing so; you know, too busy, can't 
afford it, will just start and then get bored, whatever.  In reality, 
I was nervous.
On my most recent trip to my home in Costa Rica I had the opportunity 
to meet up with new friends who roast their own coffee.  They held a 
couple of coffee testings, then gave me a lot of time on ways in 
which I might get started, should I be serious.  It started with 
reading, joining this site, reviewing other sites and so on.
I have ordered my first roaster, after much research - I won't say 
which one so we don't end up with, "oh, this other one would have 
been better," etc.  It is done, so time to just keep learning and wait.
Thank you so much for all you have shared.  I am looking forward to 
my items coming in, then starting and actually following directions, 
versus my normal way of just going for it with total impatience.
That's it.  Just wanted to thank you and once I get that first roast 
done I will share my results with you.  I have a major project 
between now and when I can actually start.  Again, new for me.  I am 
not trying to cram so much into my life that it becomes a hassle 
rather than something exciting and fascinating.

For a first roaster, not knowing if they'll stick with it? Hmmm, I'd bet
against you and say much less expensive IR2. Either that or go "all in" and
say a SF-1:-)

You're right, after lots of reading, then just going with what felt 
right I went with the IR2.  My way is to go all the way in, but I 
held back to limit the frustration of not learning, not taking the 
experiences you all have to offer.
The only thing I have gone "all in" and not regretted it is with 
computers, where I have a home network, also used for work during the 
slow seasons, I run Windows XP Pro, Win 2000, Mac, Linux (Mandrake 
build, latest) and a Solaris 10 system.  We mostly use the Windows 
based, but it is fun with all of them.  I truly want this work work 
out for me.  My friends can see the true excitement and commitment in 
me, a new thing for something like this.  It has taken many, many 
years, but just maybe I am growing up.

I would have killed for something like the IR2 back when I started 
homeroasting.  Personal ingenuity was the only product available for the 
homeroaster back then.  When Hearthware made the 'Precision' available, I 
thought I'd died and gone to heaven.  The IR2 is a few steps up from the 
Precision.  I'd say you made a good choice.  When you decide you want to 
start doing bigger batches, check out drum/grill roasting.  It can be 
cheaper than the IR2--with a little ingenuity.

Hmmm- Steve was worried he couldn't afford the equipment to start home
roasting. That kind of indicated something from Madison Avenue's engines of
promotion.
But then he did research the subject- which should have saved him from the
overpriced stuff...
I know price is relative. If you pay a few bucks up front and never have any
reason to upgrade or repair, you're a Winner.
All the bread machines do a great job making and baking whole grain loaves
of bread, along with dough for bagels on the dough cycle. That's the cycle
that turns 'em into roasters, along with Heat Guns thanks to Roaster Vicki's
HG/BM gig.

Hi Rick. I was onlline and just happened to see this.  I am fairly  
new to roasting myself and you are the first person I have heard of  
that roasts with a wok.  I gather you tried the hot air poppers and  
didnt care for that method?  I have a Wok in a box in my shed that I  
could use but it seems that you would have to stand there and stir  
the whole time and who knows if the temp would get hot enough.

      If it is an electric heated wok, probably not.  You might see  
if you can supplement the heat with a heat gun. Yes you do have to  
stir and stir and stir, that is why I am moving toward a heat gun/ 
bread machine approach.  I am working on four of them now to try to  
find the best combination.
