Topic: SMP Grinder Maintenance (5 msgs / 103 lines)

I have a grinder question I was hoping the list could help me out with.  I
have an SMP grinder that is just over a year old.  I was thinking of
replacing the center and outer burrs.  How often should the burrs on a
grinder be replaced?  The grinder is used for drip brew and not espresso.
Any opinions out there?

On my Brand New SMP, it was a cavalcade of different burrs. I could not
acquire a well-made upper (ring) burr. They were more poorly fabricated, the
later they were made.
The rough cut burr was scratching the beans, creating fines no matter what
grind pitch I was using. Kyle Anderson, Baratza president, bent over
backwards and really took care of me on that issue.
I am not aware of their current manufacturing practice, but the center burr
was far harder than the soft ring burr and would far outlast the ring burrs.
The center burr is easy to replace. In fact, if you haven't made it a
practice to remove and clean the upper burr and plastic carrier on a regular
basis, I can remove the center burr before you finish challenging the
ancestry of the ring burr.
You used the indefinite article, "a" grinder-  The larger the burrs, the
longer they will last. The service life of the burrs cannot be generalized.
(How many days can you drive between fuel stops?)

Hmm...how can one tell, then, when the burrs need to be replaced on a burr
grinder?

There's no easy way to tell.  Even sharp burrs look a bit dull at times.
--Dull ones have a lot of shiny surfaces where the sharp edge should be.
--Dull burrs make more sound than sharp ones.
--Dull burrs grind more slowly than sharp ones.
--Dull burrs make more dust than sharp ones.
You will only know for sure that you made the correct decision when you 
install the new ones and there is a drastic difference in the above.

I started out using a 10X jeweler's loupe to inspect the grounds'
appearance. In addition to the random brewing and extracting, I could see
the grounds looked like the rubble of new construction rubble when it's
swept up. I suspected something was rong.
If you can't achieve improvement in the flavor of your cup by making
incremental changes in your roasting profile, the grind pitch, brewing times
and temperatures, you can tell you have no control over some part of the
process.
Enter the Grinder. For the grinder repair, the only part I needed was a 3
prong grounded power plug. It happened to be molded to a power cord, and
that was sticking out the side of a Mazzer Major. It fit the strain relief
in the Mazzer.
