Topic: OT - Off to Iraq (Again) (17 msgs / 407 lines)
1) From: Sean Cary
Well - a ways back I had expressed hope that 07 would not see me in the
CENTCOM theater of operations...but Alas - that was not to happen...and I
even get a part of 2008... That makes 4 years in a row that I have been to
either Iraq or Qatar.
After a VERY trying spring - dealing with my dad finding out he has stage 4
melanoma along two operations, radiation etc - his mother/,y grandmother
passing away two days after his second surgery, a house sale (more like a
house giveaway in VA), house purchase (complete with Do It Yourself Move -
something we will NEVER do again)... We arrived in our new Duty Station -
Camp Lejeune NC. as a new part of the II Marine Expediationary Force HQ (II
MEF) a year before we were supposed to (doh... I volunteered for this.)...
And I am STILL MARRIED!!
I am off to Camp Fallujah for the 3rd year a row...back to coffee
purgatory. BUT I am much better prepared then my 05-06 trip! I have my
single cup and grinder already in a package to be sent when I leave Thursday
so it catches up to me soon after I get to Iraq. I am going to roast up so
fresh coffee this week to drop in the bag to get me started. (hint hint I
will be needing coffee from SOMEWHERE??) I never did find the time to make
the "deployen roaster".
I will be there until Jan 08 give or take - so I get to run the gamut of 120
degree days to just above freezing again. I did volunteer - so you do get
what you asked for!
Oh well, I am going to check out with this address before I go, and will
either restart this one (smcary) or with my new address.
Take care!
Sean

Sean,
I wish you the best during your time there, and may you return safely
very soon. Things like that must be very trying on a marriage, and I'm
glad yours has survived it.
Thank you very much for your service!!!
Take care of yourself!

Sean,
What sort of plan did you have for the "deployen roaster"?
Funny thing about that volunteer thing - always works out that way.

Is there any chance of finding an electronics type with a workbench?
Back in the day....a variac could have been liberated with a little
judicious cumshaw. then again, could be that in this digital age
variacs aren't a common tool. Do you have any access to a Navy
maintenance operation while 'in country'? It is still hard for me to
grasp that a whole gaggle of Marines would be deployed without access
to the Navy (except for the venerable Corpsman of course).

Sean,
Let me echo everyone's sentiments on your trip, and my symphathies for your father.
Qatar isn't so bad, especially if you're near Doha (the native drivers are exempt from that "not so bad" statement). At
the central souq there are several places where you can buy green beans as well as roasted ones. When I wasworking in
Messaeid we would make trips into Doha regularly to shop and to go to dinner.
