I see what you are saying, Ingrid, and totally get it. However, for
a beginner with a fairly noisy instrument wanting to hear what others
speak of is natural. As long as I can see it, smell it, and have
kept track of time and temp, I am comfortable because worst case is I
will have learned something new.
Maybe a psychologist can help us with the term - but it has to sound
serious and real, treated only by more roasting.

Sort of along the same lines of
the largely irrational fear that one is going to forget the number given
after dialing 'Information' , I think there should be a term invented for
"fear of not being able to hear 2nd crack." I doubt myself
every time, and think "Is that it? Is that it?" and then,
inevitably, I do actually hear it -- and it is (usually) clear, and I
wonder why I doubted myself. Of course I am basing this on maybe 10 whole
roasts with my popcorn popper; I know other people may have real
difficulties, where I think mine is just 2nd-crack-anxiety. ( I think I
did get a slight burn on my cheek from listening too close last night,
though.)
