Isn't chicory, strictly speaking, an "herb?" (Or as a root, is it
really a "spice?" I know its leaves in salad are herbs). I do indulge
in certain herbs--vinpocetine for tinnitus (and until I was put on
aspirin therapy, ginkgo), valerian for the rare bout of insomnia,
gymnema for carb metabolism, and lots of fresh basil--the latter to
go with ripe tomatoes and mozzarella di bufala.
As to smoking, I never touched tobacco--my mom (aleha hasholom) was a
3.5 pack/day smoker for 50 years, and seeing how cigarettes and the
occasional lack thereof dominated her life (and having to wash dinner
dishes that also doubled as ashtrays--yecch) I never even
contemplated starting to smoke. As to weed, I was a senior in college
before I tried it. It never did anything for me but give me a sore
throat--and eventually asthma (which was a relief, as I now had an
excuse that proved an effective shield against peer pressure).

as sold on the site, its a root, like ginger. wonder if you can pickle and
slice it thin? hmm..
on the same note, can you use ginger leaves as a salad herb?

The following allegation may be subject to a small constant error:
"...I must be the last pot virgin in existence."
What do you know about a 22 year old GI in the Philippines, Thailand and
Vietnam in the mid Sixties- pot virgin, or no? Still am, with the exception
of The Dentist's Chair, when I become a coward with no pain tolerance.
A couple of Dum Dums like CoTylenol were pretty much a waste of money, as I
remember.
I'm ultimately glad Sandy mentioned gymnema, although I had early thought I
would be reading about female medical disorders. Not the case.
Cheers -RayO, aka Opa!

Nope--gymnema has nothing to do with "female" problems---it helps
control carb cravings and manage blood sugar in those who are not yet
Type 2 diabetics but who need a little help metabolizing
carbohydrates. You're thinking of black cohosh, pennyroyal, etc.
("Remifemin").

Um, I do use nitrous as an oxidizer in my rocket motors. We call it
"passing gas". And it DOES make an odd sound due to some strange
shockwave harmonics in the feed tank.

Bob - I gotta know. Have you ever, upon hearing someone comment "Well, I am
not a rocket scientist, but....", answered with "Well I *am* a rocket
scientist..."

The correct reply is " Well, actually, I am." And we proceed from there.
  Fun to do.
And just to show all of you that rocket scientists do have a sense of
humor ...
We use NO2 as an oxidizer. The fuel can be anything that burns. We once
used a 5 pound summer sausage. Lousy thrust, but a very interesting smell.
