Topic: an odd convert - to the aroma (14 msgs / 465 lines)

Okay, this one is odd.  My partner has never liked any kind of warm 
drink.  He actually has been to the doctor's about it, for he will 
get sick after drinking any kind of warm to hot drink; if not sick, 
he will feel ill.  There are meds for this, but it doesn't help much.
To that end, the smell of coffee has never really been a favorite, he 
hasn't hated it or anything like that, but it just reminded him of 
being ill if he were to drink it.
So, now I am roasting, doing my best to keep the house from smelling 
too much, but it is tough, no matter what approach I take due to the 
design of our house.   However, I have reached the best solution 
while the weather hits 98 or higher and it is extremely humid and I 
am not going to roast on the IR2 outside, heaven knows what I would 
get and it isn't necessary.
He came in the other night and sniffed around a bit and I waited to 
hear that is was kind of tough for him, total opposite happened.
First he said, "oh great, you had time to roast some of your coffee, 
how did it go?  Are you happy with what you got?"  I said, I did and 
said that I had cut the aroma as much as possible.  He came back and 
said, no, this is nice, it gives the house a nice "homey" feel to 
it.  He then sniffed the beans and asked to try a sip when I brewed 
it.  So, this morning I brewed it, he tasted it, liked it, only the 
second coffee he had ever had, and then said he tasted chocolate a 
little bit, did I add any.  Of course I hadn't, it was the 
coffee.  He could only get down a few sips before he had to take meds 
to stop him from getting ill.  It must be tough to go through life 
like that, but he used to hate the smell of coffee and does at his 
parents and other places, which, for me, just proves that the 
freshness of the roasting also can be detected in the aroma from the 
roast - does that make sense?  Or am I just deducing what I want it to be?

Wow - guess that would be the worst for any of us, wouldn't it - not being
able to taste our wonderful homeroasts. But its great that he's beginning to
tolerate & even like the aromas coming from your roasting.
Never heard of any conditions that causes anything like that. You know, we
are so used to drinking warm liquids - can't imagine not being able to drink
coffee, or soup in the winter (once, when I lived in Arizona, I HAD to make
soup when we got an actual cloudy day in the fall - only to have to dump it
all since it WAS close to 90 degrees outside - but I saw a grey sky & I had
to make soup!)

It is odd, and worst of all is that he misses out on the camaraderie 
that can happen when a group of people are sitting around on the 
couch drinking a nice cup of hot coffee.  He can be there, but there 
is part of the shared experience missing.  At least he loves the aromas.

He does like iced.  It makes sense to me that many of the flavors 
would still come out iced, some may not, some may be enhance, it 
could be an even trade off.  We will try it.  Or, get one of those 
cold method brewers that was a topic last week or so.

Im going out on a limb here but,  what about chilled coffee.   make 
yours up and fridge it, he might be able to tolerate that without 
getting sick.

personally, i can't stand cold-brewed coffee in anything other than 
frappes (kills any brightness whatsoever, lingers forever and a day and 
not in a good way like espresso), but some enjoy its low acidity (to be 
fair, it's much easier on your stomach than hot-brewed iced coffee).
