I'm not sure how to set Gmail for plaintext. Will "*Unicode (UTF-8) encoding
for outgoing messages" *do it?

I do not think so. That is a character encoding standard. Maybe one of the gmail advocates will
enlighten us all.
This states you are already sending plain text only: Content-Type: text/plain; charsetF-8 that is
copied from your email header.

But what would really help a lot-- is if everyone only used plaintext
formatting for the list and didn't put any attachments on.

Rich,
I THOUGHT I had set gmail for plain text, but it was quite a while ago, and
now I don't see a place to set preferences of this sort. But again, sounds
like I am already in plain text, so I guess I won't worry about it any
further.

Brian,
As you compose a GMAIL message, there is a hyperlink below the address box,
above the message box, entitled << Plain Text ... So click it and all you
emboldened highlighted and aumented text will become simply - text...

Brian,
You are definitely sending only plain text. Some programs will send both and some allow the user to
select one format or another. Almost all of these email programs do a very good job of hiding the user
option to select the format.

sometimes I just paste whatever into my mail message, then hit PLAINTEXT,
and then hit RICHFORMATTING so I can highlight the parts I wish...
Take care,
