I do remember us having a blind roaster - he was trying to use the
Aeropress, and they went out and made him a special one with raised
markings to hit the correct measurements...
You will find an outpouring of assitanace here...
For a few months I had moved from a Poppery I built by Mike Dhabolt
(my Dhaboltenroaster) to a SC/TO, and the glass on the SC/TO gets
covered with coffee oils to the point that I roast by smell/time/smoke
- pretty much blind as far as the roasting process.  The Poppery
roasting is more visual then the SC/TO, and I had a hard time at first
nailing and not over roasting.

Welcome to the list.  I don't intend to trivialize your challenges by
the following statement.  Many of us here roast "blind" because we
roast with a RK drum.  What I mean by this statement is to encourage
you!  By the design, we have to use all of our other senses to get our
roasts right.  I may be a RK drum roasting snob, but I do believe that
it produces one of the best roasts going.  So use your sense of smell
and sound to learn our fun obsession and you will be far ahead of all
of those that simply depend on sight.  It is the most inferior sense
for roasting anyway.  So again welcome and we are here to help.

I love the RK drum.  I am probably going to go back to a breadmachine /
heatgun for more practice in recognizing the stages properly, because that's
where I am having trouble (keep pulling the roast too soon because i fear
overroasting, especially with 2lb at a time).

Thanks for all the kind welcomes ...and especially, Les, for the encouraging 
news!  Sound and smell I can manage, (grin).  Oh yes, and I did forget to 
mention that my apartment is an efficiency ...a *very* efficient one, about 
the size of a private railroad car (the old fashioned neat kind), so room is 
going to be a very major issue.  Still, it sounds very much as though, 
either for the shop or for me (or both), this all sounds eminently doable 
...and there is nothing quite so nice as a fun and delicious challenge.
Shoshana, back on the learning curve ...which is way taller than I am, 
(grin).
