While visiting in Lansing Michigan some time back, I was driving along with
my host while he was providing a "tour guide" monologue of what I was
seeing.
"Over there you will see our school for the blind -- One of the most
progressive such schools there is and known around the world.
...and over there is one of the centers where they train folks to use guide
dogs..."
You get the picture.
A little way down the road I came up behind a full-sized van and was taken
aback by the sign on the back that stated: "Caution: Blind Driver"
I looked at my host and simply said: "Really?!"
He smiled and said: "Really."
A block or two later and I saw another similar van with the same sign. I
thought to myself: "Progressive? These folks are amazing!"
I started to ask about the technology I imagined must be in the front of
those vans and how the blind were trained to respond to this signal or that
and my host began to laugh...then really laugh.
He explained that this was a sort of "joke" for visitors and that the vans
were delivery vans from a local manufacturer of Venetian Window Blinds. They
knew quite well what the signs implied, but took great delight in fooling
rubes like me.
It has never left me, however, that feeling I had when I thought that
someone had invented a way to replace vision in driving an automobile. I
still keep waiting for the day it becomes reality!
