Topic: OT - Coffee after a tough day (21 msgs / 462 lines)

So, it has just been "one of those days."  We all have them. It was 
my turn today.  A rough day with some new meds, feeling flaky and 
spaced out, but more, a client just doesn't get what things 
cost.  They added a lot to what we produce and can't understand why I 
can't keep the cost the same.  It would be like me asking SMs to let 
me have 5 pounds of coffee for the price of 3 because I only have 
money for 3.  On top of that, I would also like SMs to keep their 
prices the same for the next 5 years.
So, with that going on, plus the other stuff, it has been one long, 
quite tense, tough day.
The solution - you bet, right on.  I brewed up a couple of cups of 
the Guatemala Chimeltenango - San Jose Ocano I roasted last 
night.  Sure, it hasn't rested a full day, but it is mighty fine.  I 
sit back, flip on the stereo and listen to some tunes from XM radio 
and just melt into the chair.  As the flavors of the coffee fill my 
body with the excitement of each roast I begin to forget about the 
day.  As the knowledge that I listened to many of you and created 
something that I couldn't have done a mere 6 weeks ago, my muscles 
begin to leg go and relax.  Sure, it is warm out today, but the heat 
of the coffee lets my body release the tension that has built up 
throughout the day.
Who knew that one day I would find a way to relax by brewing and 
drinking coffee I chose to buy and then roasted.  To top it off I did 
it with the help of a lot of new friends.  It doesn't matter which 
roaster I used, which grinder I used, what type of brew method I 
used, for the coffee tastes great and I slip into the place that my 
own roast can take me - it is quiet here, the stress is long gone, 
the tension has fallen away and I just sit and enjoy a warm cup.  Not 
a bad day at all, not at all.

I also had a difficult day. I know what you mean about how that wonderful,
wonderful cup can take all the stress away!
Had my first day in culinary class, and I was ready to quit before the day
was ended! Our tour of our kitchen left me wondering if I had made the right
decision to be there - I'm a bit clumsy (ha - what an understatement) and
have this aversion to machines that I have spoken about before.
So there I was, surrounded by machines that could cut my hand off, intense,
powerful gas that could burn me, refrigerators (could get locked inside)...
slicers (I won't go there)... big pots of boiling water... and sore feet.
Not to mention my own very scarey, large & sharp set of knives.
Think I am going to have nightmares tonight...
Sigh... so since I got home, I have been craving a cup of the Harrar Horse I
roasted the other day. I have to get to bed really early so I can get up by
5 am, and since I finished the last of the decaf... I'll just wait.
Tomorrow morning, though... mmm.
I hope tomorrow is a better day for you - keep drinking that wonderful
elixir from SM's - and, please, keep writing. I look forward to reading your
posts.

High stress, long hours.
Received my first SM 8-pack sampler yesterday, but didn't get a chance to do
a roast.  Yesterday was a lot like today.
But perhaps I should use the waning moments of daylight to try roasting one
of some very intriguing coffees.  I let myself run out of beans last week
(such a sad predicament that I'll never let happen again), and so could
really use a good brew.and I don't mean ale.
Wonder which one I should choose.?  More on that surprise, and my resultant
change in attitude, later.

ah, i've had so many instances of such therapy since my homeroasting 
journey began. i generally try to do it the other way around, with my 
morning ritual (whether it's a double espresso, French press, manual 
pourover, whatever) as preventive maintenance against such days. some 
days though, if i get home early enough, or i have some of Tom's 
exceptional decafs roasted up, i do it your way. great recap, Stephen.

Yes Rich, the sampler pack contained only green beans (how did you guess!?).
After much deliberation, I chose to roast the Guatemala Frijanes - Finca
Aqua Tibia to a FC.  The subtitle description printed on the package sounded
too delicious: "At Full City:  Tangy, bittersweet chocolate notes with spicy
accents of clove, cardamom, apple cider in finish".  Tried a bean after
cooling and can definitely taste the chocolate and clove.  Don't know yet
what cardamom tastes like.  I'll have to get into the spice cabinet to
learn.  No apple cider yet, but perhaps that'll come out after it rests and
is brewed properly.
Here's my first attempt at a log.  Please help me figure out what else to
document and how I might improve this roast.

      77 F ambient, 79% humidity
	Chefmate Hot Air Popcorn Popper w/ 50' 16 gauge extension cord
	SM Guatemala Frijanes - Finca Aqua Tibia
	1/3 cup green beans
	First crack 3:30

      Removed and cooled :10 after second crack
	Full City Roast

2. Mexico FTO Oaxaca Pluma [At City+: Nutty, mild, bright.  At FC+: Tangy
bittersweet chocolate, more intensity]
3*. Nicaragua Placeras Estate Miel [At City+ to FC+: Malt and grain
sweetness, beeswax aroma, raw honey, nuts, caramel, medium-heavy body]
4. Tanzania NgoroNgoro Convent [At City+ through Full City: Fruited with
pear, apple, and candy-like notes, with rustic "wild note" in finish]
5. Zimbabwe AA -Dandoni Estate [At Full City: A balanced coffee, caramelly
with rustic hints, herbal, sage, tarry sweetness, slight citrus]
6. Brazil Organic Fazenda Jacaranda [FC to FC+: Balanced chocolate with ripe
fruit (slight winey note), creamy body, great as S.O. espresso]
7. Sumantra Classic Mandheling [Full City+: Colombia low-toned,
caramel-chocolate roast taste, fruity-earthy hints, bittersweet finish,
heavy body]
8. Costa Rica Naranjo Caracol Peaberry [At City+ roast: A clean, bright cup
with citrus fragrance, toffee roast notes, crisp cup character]
* My second choice for tonight's roast.  Tough decision!
Yup, today ended up great.
And tomorrow morning's brew is really gonna make my day special!
