Yes Mike, you are correct. The Nuova Simonelli (I have the Appia) is a form
of heat exchanger. But I was meaning the usual sense of the phrase which is the
E61 type which does not have a screw holding in the screen and water diffusing
disk. I know many owners of those who don't ever remove the screen to
clean because they say it destroys their gasket each time. I don't know because
I have never owned one. Both the NS and the Cimbali have easy to remove screws.
Can you imagine the effect on the flavor by the buildup of gunk in and above
the screen because it is never removed? I backflush twice weekly but this does
not remove the buildup. Only removing the screen and disk can do it.

Jeffrey,
I figured you meant E61 when you said HX but am surprised you consider "the
usual usage of HX" to mean E61. Especially considering the attention to
detail you usually display. While true many Prosumer espresso machines
utilize a Heat Exchanger (HX) for brewing and many Prosumer espresso
machines also utilize an e61 brew group the term HX does not and never has
referred to the E61 group itself.
