The pollen count in Chicago is awful--and between that, the new-mown
grass at tonight's Cubs game, and getting over a cold (not to mention
having temporarily run out of Singulair for a few days) I have been
wheezing so hard that if you put a keyboard on my arm you could play
"Lady of Spain" on my lungs. So while I wait for the all-night
pharmacy to fill my emergency scrip for an albuterol inhaler (which
until now I hadn't needed in nearly a year), I decided to make myself
a double ristretto. I'm still wheezing, but not as much.

I definitely don't have your degree of allergy problems, but my morning
cup, either FP or Chemex typically, do a great job helping to clear my
throat. It's no surprise to me, but it would be interesting if one could
find out if it's more than the heat/liquid, like something intrinsic to
coffee.

wheezies..

Actually, caffeine is a theobromine; while a double shot of espresso
has less total caffeine than an 8 oz mug of drip, it has caffeine in
a greater concentration and the smaller drink volume gets it into
your system that much faster. Years ago when I developed a severe
asthma attack up at The Abbey Resort in WI, the hospital ER told my
husband when he called ahead to make sure I drank plenty of real
black coffee enroute to get my lungs to calm down and receptive to
the neb treatments that awaited me.

Yes - caffeine is an excellent substitute for albuterol if one ever runs out
- I've used it a few times.
Much tastier, too!

Actually caffeine is not theobromine. The three most common food stimulants
are called methylxanthines, and are theobromine, theophylline and caffeine.
Theobromine is only found in cacao, but caffeine might also be present.
Theophylline and caffeine can be found in tea. Caffeine is the one found in
coffee.
