Topic: question about liberica and roasting method (9 msgs / 201 lines)

Based on the recent threads about the liberica, it seems that I
experienced more of the less-desirable aromatics than others. It was
quite drinkable after 5 days, but still it wasn't the mind-blowing
experience that others have described. While I admit that this might
simply reflect my own personal taste preference, I was wondering if it
could be due in part to roasting method? I use a FreshRoast, which, of
course, roasts very fast. Could it be that a slower, more controlled
roast would do better justice to this coffee, or would that not have a
significant effect?

I'm a data point that fits your theory.  my roast was right at 18  
minutes.

Absolutely roast times can make a huge difference in the cup. Not just total
roast time, but even same roast time same finish bean temp using different
ramp rates can vary the cup substantially. But not just roast times and
ramps, methods of heat transfer to the bean also comes into play. Only been
roasting 7 years various methods, profile roasting 5 years various methods,
somewhere around 1500 batches so far. Figure another 50 years 50,000 batches
should have a good handle on the near infinite variables! Of course I'll
have to live to be a bit over 100... :-)

it's time to move things up to the next level, by switching to a
better roasting method. I'm probably going to give HGDB a try.

In my Hottop my profile took 11 minutes to first crack and four minutes
through first crack but second had not yet started for what I took to be =
a
nice city+ roast.

The HG/DB is a GREAT method, you can really SEE and SMELL every stage of
the roast you will understand so much more when you do that! Give it a
try after all it is cheap and effective for increasing your batch size.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm still getting by with the FR, mainly
because I'm so busy these days that it's hard to make the time to
learn a new method, but as soon as my schedule eases up I'm heading
over to Home Depot.
One thing's for sure - home roasting has been even more of a learning
experience than I had expected, but the progress of my learning has
definitely plateaued with the FR. Honestly, I find it almost
impossible to tell the difference between C+ and FC with this roaster.

Well advice for the HG/DB.... Get some trash beans and roast till burnt
(pausing every so often to pull a few at each roast level)  so you will
understand the process all the way through this will help you to better
work with something like a Drum in the future when your sight is removed
from the process. I still go back to the HG/DB for a small roast
occasionally as a refresher even though most of my roasts are in the
drum thses days...
IMO and YMMV
