Topic: apartment roasting (9 msgs / 189 lines)

I'm guessing, but just want to verify, that the apartment roaster (I
live up north, in an apartment, and it is winter, so way too cold to
be roasting outside :) is going to be best served with a commercial
roasting machine?
Other alternatives just seem too smoke-producing for the intrepid indoorsman...

Prior reviews indicate that the Behmor 1600 is almost smoke free as long as you stay away from full 
Vienna or darker.

These fans have an exhaust/intake switch which works for exhausting 
smoke and chaff, as well as doubling as a cooler in the intake position...

IMHO the Z&D or the Behmor will be your best options for what you are 
looking for ie.. indoor roasting
I used the Z&D while onboard the ship for an 8 month deployment and 
loved it the whole way

I am very happy with my Nesco Home Roaster (formerly Zach & Dani) from Sweet
Previously, I used a modified popcorn popper.  I had the heating element
running through a dimmer switch to control the heat and would roast 125
grams of beans at a time.  The Nesco will do 5 ounces (150 grams) at a time.
I could do 150 grams with the popper if I tilted it at about 30 degrees.  I
ran a dryer duct from the glass globe I used on the popper as a chimney to
the basement window for venting.  
I have read concerns of too slow a roast or not being able to obtain a dark
roast with the Zach & Dani.  I've not had any problems with slow roasts or
not being able to obtain a darker roast.  But I'm also blessed to have 120
volts at the outlets I usually use for roasting.
I have to be careful not to char my beans.  My roasts are generally between
16 minutes to 20 minutes depending on which bean I'm roasting.  Those times
include the 5 minute cool cycle, so we are looking at roasting times of 11
minutes to 15 minutes.  
For reference, I'm currently roasting 5 ounces of Sumatra Classic
Mandheling.  I always keep an eye on the roast, but I set the timer at 20
minutes (15 heat/5 cooling) and that is just right Full City + for that
If you are interested in the Nesco, I would first use a volt meter to see
what voltage you have at what ever outlet you plan on using.  If you have
decent voltage, I'd highly recommend the Nesco.

#1 take battery out of smoke detector
#2 roast by open window with fan or other means of smoke withdrawl.  Ok 
I have roasted in front of the open dryer on fluff cycle running so it 
sucks out the smoke before... red neck, yep but it worked....
#3 be prepared to pick up / sweep / vaccuum some chaff, you will NOT 
catch it all in whatever contraption you have.
Me, I don't care, it gets smoky as hell in here sometimes,  I kind of 
like the smoke smell, open the window let it air out naturally and the 
apt smells like coffee for a few days.   THe neighbors don't mind 
either, when they smell that, they know im roasting more coffee and then 
want some.
You can always roast on a porch if you have one, or balcony, or 
whatever.  Sometimes in the bathroom might work, they have the little 
fan in them, you can close the door(s) so the smoke is trapped in there 
until it gets sucked out.  Folks upstairs can't complain too much about 
that, it's sure a lot better smelling than what normally is coming out 
of that pipe heh......  Worse case, take a nice hot shower afterwards,  
tween the water and steam you'll trap a lot of the remaining smoke and 
flush it down the drain.

Exactly how far up north, Chris? I am in Central Alberta and roast in my 
unheated garage all winter long. We're talking cold--babee--cold. I use 
a bread machine heat /gun combo. I have also roasted in the open air 
when it was well below freezing. The (machine) roaster does just fine, 
but if it's windy, the (human) roaster, not as well.
