I'm obviously not a frequent poster to the list, but I read all the time. Just had to share my great find at the thrift store today with an audience who can truly appreciate it. Back in August, I told my mom that I'd like a Chemex 10 cup machine made brewer for Christmas and I gave her the link to SM. Today, I found not one, but TWO Chemex brewers. First, I spotted the glass handle brewer. It was marked $2.99, but this thrift store has a 50% off sale on all the time - just their standard marketing program I discovered some time ago. So I snatched this brewer up and thought I had made my best score there this month. I walked around some more and, lo and behold, there's another one! This one was the 13 cup handblown brewer and it was marked $.99, so I got it for 50 cents. You wouldn't believe all the great coffee roasting, brewing and serving equipment I've gotten at this store. People in Orange County give really good stuff to the thrift store
:) The only bad part of this whole deal was breaking the news to my mom, who of course already ordered, received and wrapped the one I requested. Can't wait to get some Chemex filters and start using this!

Congrads on the great find & welcome out of lurkdom!
I love it when I find those gems. Unfortunately, the only local thrift store
with walking distance (or the T, Boston's illustrious subway & bus system,
lol) is a Salvation Army which, for some strange reason, has the most
ridiculously high prices. Which is really strange, because the community is
about the poorest in the state... so much for serving the immediate
community. I miss my old thrift store finds (back in my car-days).. sigh....
Enjoy your Chemex & please - keep posting!

No reason you can't start a collection. I have probably a dozen of all
shapes and sizes.

Oh yes - the collection is well under way! I just started to count and I believe I'm well over a dozen. That's not even getting started on my roasting equipment. I just started roasting in March. I use a BM/HG for 16 to 21 oz batches and hot air popper for 5 oz batches. Of course I have backup bread machines and poppers on a shelf in the garage should any of these items fail or if I want to get a friend set up to begin roasting. The people at the thrift store think I love coffee, bread and popcorn - they are correct, but not necessarily prepared they way they might expect based on the stuff I buy.

Hi Frank,
I'm in Tustin, but don't try to find out where my lucky thrift store is - I don't want to share :)

They'll smell the roast and see you roasting. You might get a visit from the
Polizei. One drink of the resulting coffee and the Polizei will relent and
block off the premises of the "offended" citizen as a crime scene!
What a horrid situation is taking place- I'm sorry to hear of it.

Congratulations. Kris. I hope you enjoy your Chemex as much as I've enjoyed=
mine (also a thrift store purchase, although not nearly as good a deal as =
yours). I also find a treasure at a thrift store every now and then. Last w=
eek I scored a Silex vacuum brewer. The gasket does not quite seal properly=
, but a little plumbers tape fixed that.

I'm envious of you people who score great deals in your thrift stores. =
Here in Syracuse, NY there is absolutely nothing but junk. Furniture =
that isn't fit to let a dog sit in, and forget about anything coffee =
related. All that they have are Mr. Coffee's and the like that would be =
rejected from a land fill. I'm not kidding. We have several around =
this area at least 10 of varying organizations. None of them never has =
anything coffee related that was worth a dime except for perhaps a cup. =
