Topic: political posts (37 msgs / 1357 lines)
1) From: Robert Gulley
Just have to spout off for a moment -
I have been on a number of lists over the years as a computer
user/hobbiest of various things and so many times politics has to
come in and ruin a good list. WHY? There are forums for political
discussion aplenty, and our daily world is filled with it morning to night.
Please, please don't turn this list into that as well. I enjoy
reading people's coffee experiences, just as I can enjoy some off
topic discussions. And I am thrilled to read posts by people like
Sean, putting his life on the line for us regardless of the politics,
and still able to enjoy his coffee passion to the best of his ability
under difficult circumstances.
Regardless of your particular political persuasions, there is no way
that political comments are going to reflect everyone's view, and so
someone, many someone's, are going to be offended regardless of what
you say. Why do it?
Why take something so enjoyable as a coffee forum and bring politics
into it of any stripe? I read these posts in part the same way I
drink coffee - as a momentary escape from "the real world."
Now we even have a quote from George Carlin bashing people of faith - WHY?
Can't we leave the bashing for another place/time? Why is there a
need to nitpick people, posts, choices? I just don't get it. I am
sure this will cause some flames to be sent my way - so be it. Just
take a moment can consider what I am asking for - for the good of everyone.
I for one, will just sit here and enjoy a good cup of coffee - how about you?

I have a folder of about 120 randomly-selected signatures. That was
the one that popped up. I didn't see it as an anti-faith thing as it
was a comment about authoritarianism and ineptitude, both human
failings. Usually if I think one of my sigs is too inflammatory, I'll
change it (as I just did in this mail), but I didn't see the Carlin
one as offensive.
As far as politics and the war, I think Maj. Cary knows I am not in
agreement with him or many people on the need for this war or how it
has been directed from the top. But I am sure he realizes that I,
along with the great majority of Americans, realize that freedom is
bought dear by men and women committed to doing that which we at home
cannot, or will not, do...and that part of their mission is to obey
their orders regardless of whether they agree politically. I have
military friends and realize VERY well that even in times of peace,
military families sacrifice much in order to keep America prepared to
face any threat to our freedoms. It's because of this dedication I
have much gratitude for those in uniform, and I am certain Maj. Cary
knows this despite our ideological differences.
He also knows we all like good coffee and that despite our occasional
off-topic jaunts, we always return to that and the friendliness of
this group.

Clearly you have a very good point about political posts but quotes and sigs should not offend you on a coffee list.
We all have tons-o-sigs laying around that just pop up for our own pleasure. There are lots I think stink but hey mine most likely do for some as well.
I really suggest you simply enjoy your coffee and ignore sigs and political comment.
If the list heads that way it turns around by itself when everyone that complains about the topic stops!!

whoa - there has not been a shred of politics in my posts...just the
ramblings of a Marine who is also a homeroaster...and who is amongst
the unwashed who drink from nasty coffee messes.
In fact I replied to the poster who made the comment about the war - off list.
If comments I made about some really great Americans who are here with
me is political, then you need to drink LESS coffee and re-read what I
wrote.

I'm not referring to anything current--I just remember one post, a
LONG time ago, where someone said something about the war and you
responded with vigor about your feelings. It was pretty political,
but I figured you have the authority to make comments about the war,
being IN IT and all. :) Anyway, it didn't cause any real fuss, but
it was just the one post.

I am not sure who you are replying to here, but you have made my
point perfectly. I believe most of us enjoy hearing your comments,
and I for one am in full agreement with your post earlier today - the
brave men and women of the armed forces are our heros - regardless of
political issues. Why your comments had to require a political
comment is beyond me.

Okay - I WAS NOT referring to Sean's post - I thought that was clear
from what I wrote. I was referring to Jim Raven's opining about the war:
"I'm glad they weren't FORCED TO GO but pity them for being there for
no real good reason yet again, Politics gets the innocent killed.
Pity but ADMIRE THEM!!!!! I Neeeded to clear up my opinion. "
Why was the opinion even necessary here - that's my point.
And Jim Raven's comments about George Carlin's brillance - since he
emphasized it, it does indicate a bashing of those who might belong
to "organized religion."
Things are not said in a vacuum.
I'll bow out of this topic - my whole point was to encourage us all
to just get along.
