I think I remember learning in school ages ago that languages that were =
often chisled into stone (such as Latin) were written left to write as =
that was the most comfortable way to move the chisel, but languages that =
were usually written with a stylus in soft wax or clay (Semitic =
languages such as Hebrew and Aramaic) were written right to left because =
that was the best way to move a stylus. I don't have a source for this =
other than my very imperfect memory.
