It is to laugh.
There are so many talented and far more experienced roasters on the list
that it is embarrassing to have been one of the people profiled. I think
I was chosen because I was a two-fer, they got gender and geographic
diversity rolled into one. Mebbe a three-fer, as the author seemed
smitten with the very low tech way I roast.
I thought she went a bit overboard on the safety part, after all I have
never actually had to use my fire extinguisher, but I do have a big
honking warning on my roasting FAQ page.
I know the author spent some time with Tom and maria, so I am hoping
that the part of the article that is not on-line sings their praises. I
know I did during the interview itself.

Ginny! >>> blushing <<<
Like I said before ... I owe quite a lot to everyone on this list.
And to echo Vicki's sentiments, I hope the author included all of my
praises for Tom, Maria, Derek and the gang at Sweet Maria's including
the members of this list!
Hopefully it will be visible in the photo, but I did make sure that
several bags of Sweet Maria's coffee were in there, including a 20
pounder!

Since I saw you were a St Louis native, which high school did you go to?
I'm not a native, but lived there long enough.

That is a St. Louis joke where no matter what you might do as an adult,
or where you might have gone after HS, this is of primary importance.
I didn't go to HS in St. Louis. But, as a substitute, I would like to
say that I lived for most of my St. Louis days in St. Margaret of
Scotland and later moved to Cathedral. Even Jews like me learn to
identify their neighbourhoods by parish in St. Louis.

City of St Louis, then? I lived in the county. Have no idea which Parish
it was. It was a little place on Page between the inner belt and North
and South.
And BTW, congrats to you and Eddie. Sorry -- I sent too quickly last time.

Congrats. Vicki & Eddie! And Vicki, if that's you (the slender
bespectacled brunette) in the pix on your site, bravo for really
sticking to your low-carb diet! It's a daily struggle for me--some
major life stresses led to feeling sorry for myself and backsliding
to the point where I regained 35 of the 60 lbs. I'd lost; and I am
still zaftig, alas, just trying not to get more zaftig.

Brett that's 'insider information' not for the general public ;-)
My favorite part:
And Smith's roasting has brought her more than just good brews. When
she applied for a job with the Canadian Mental Health Association, her
interviewer suggested they meet for coffee. "I said, 'Why don't you
come here to my house because I make better coffee than any place.' We
went out to my garage and roasted coffee as part of my job interview."
Yes, she got the job.
Great job Eddie and Vicki!

You guys are a hoot, but remember, what happens on the homeroast list,
stays on the homeroast list.
I thought it was a bit unfortunate that she emphasized the whole burn
down the house part, but I do have this honking big warning on my FAQ
page so I understand where she got that angle. I just didn't want to get
sued because some ninny got so carried away that his/her garage burst
into flames and then decided to sue me.
The author wrote back and said she was sending hard copy and a PDF of
the article to us (the people she profiled). She also said we had
inspired her to homeroast herself.
And yes, Ginny, low carb worked for me, and that is me on the site. I
lost over 100 pounds.
vicki
PS: Yirgacheffe isn't really my favourite bean, it's just what I was
roasting the day she called. At the moment, Blue Batak is right up there
as it is what I am drinking today. I am not just a hot mama, but a
fickle one as well.

YES!
I finally got my copy of Imbibe Magazine (I already had a
subscription) and Sweet Maria's did get a mention as a resource for
"beans and supplies!" Also, Sweet Maria's labels are visible on the
bags of coffee in the photo!
Looks like our efforts paid off, Vicki!
It is humorous that reference to the Brazil Jacu Bird Coffee appears
twice; it is mentioned once in the article and is in a photo as well.
Have a great weekend everyone.
Respectfully,
Eddie
