Topic: rocky/silvia v. ?? (9 msgs / 166 lines)
1) From:
Have a friend looking for espresso machine/grinder. I have rocky/silvia, he is hoping for that quality, but a little cheaper. Anyone using and happy with something that fits that description?
Thanks,
TIM

Nope,
I tried three Gaggias and a Solis SL90 along with too many
grinders to count before moving up to Silvia and Rocky/ And, they
have been replaced with the Quick Mill Andreja and the Mazzer Major.
I'm relatively happy with them but you can never tell.

Pecan Jim,
You said "relatively happy". I have a Mazzer Major (actually two) and
an Isomac Venus. I am considering upgrading and the Andreja is one of
the "possibles". In a perfect world what would you like better than
what you have now? (within a few hundred dollars)
Just curious,
Jerry

Ditch the vibe and tank and go rotary direct plumbed whether HX or dual
boiler. You'll never regret it. Years ago doing the float-valve auto fill
mod on Silvia was a far more valuable mod than PID IMO.
If you entertain much the QM line doesn't have near the recovery power of
the HX Bricoletta or the Vibiemme Domobar or dual boiler Vivaldi. If I was
in the market for a good home machine I'd sit tight for a few months,
Vibiemme (and I believe a mfg or two others) are coming out with rotary dual
boiler prosumer models.

Mike any idea of price point - I am planning on a Silvia when I get
home in Feb...would it be anywhere near that?
I have only owned what you all refer to as Steam Toys - and a higher
end Krups... Got the Rocky waiting for me, so that is taken care
of...but I have been waffling on the machine.

I have really avoided looking at other espresso machines and grinders
right now because I don't really want to think about replacing them
for a while. One thing I know I would like is a rotary pump instead
of a vibrating one on the espresso machine. I wonder if a transplant
is possible? I would really like to make the Major doserless but I
can't find out how to tell if the kit will work on my second hand
machine.

If Miss Silvia can be (and has been) mod'ed with a rotary pump an AJ most
certainly can. Of course the Silvia I'm thinking of also has brew boiler
temp stabilized via PID AND incoming water thermoblock pre-heated, group
head stablized via PID rope heater, IIRC electronically variable
pre-infusion circuit and I forget what else...
