Topic: Facial masks to keep out smoke (4 msgs / 106 lines)
1) From: Vicki Smith
I've had yet another bout of pneumonia and my doctor has told me that
even after it clears up, it is essential that I avoid smoke.
I roast with a bread machine and a heat gun, so smoke happens. I will
probably get a Behmor, at some point, but that may have to wait for a bit.
In any case, I figure someone on the list knows what kind of facial mask
would keep me as close to smoke free as possible. I've been running a
fan that directs the smoke away from me, and wearing a carbon mask, but
I do want to try to follow my doctor's advice.

I think your best bet will probably be to hit your local hardware
megalomart and find a respirator with cartridges rated for smoke
removal. They aren't exactly cheap and the cartridges do have to be
replaced periodically, but if smoke avoidance is essential...

I got some nice masks at Lowe's a couple weeks ago when the air was so bad here in SoCal from the wildfires. They are in the paint department (at probably any big hardware type store) and the ones I got have a little respirator on them. It's a one way valve thing so that the air you exhale can go out. These masks are quite thick and fit very close around the face. I don't have the label that was on the package and the Lowe's website doesn't show this particular mask. I've also been thinking that I really ought not sit there and breath in all that smoke, but haven't gone so far as to bring the mask in from the car. I used the mask for taking a walk on a smoky morning and it worked really well.
