So I read how some of you vac seal beans in canning jars and that sounded like a great idea. I've got the Foodsaver (I got it for $5 at the thrift store, of course) and decided I would like to do the same. I checked out the jar sealer online and saw it was about $10. Kind of expensive when you need one for each jar, but it wouldn't be the first time I was surprised at the lengths people around here would go to for the sake of the bean. I was at an outlet mall today and saw these on the shelf and decided I would splurge and get 2, you know, so I can store stuff in 2 jars. I took one out of the box when I got home and looked at it and thought "how in the world does this seal anything - there's no valve or anything, it's just a hole in the top." I had to read through the directions a couple of times before I understood that you actually use the metal canning lid. Doh! I'll be sealing up lots more than 2 jars! I guess it won't hurt to have a
backup jar sealer though. I can put it to use on that other Foodsaver I got at the thrift store that vacuums fine but won't seal bags. Good thing I didn't already toss it in the trash!
