Topic: Behmor bean loss (6 msgs / 320 lines)
1) From: Sandra Andina
So I did a 1 lb (actually, 414 rather than 400gm, anticipating some
loss) roast last night of Aged Sumatra, p4, program D. Textbook Vienna
roast. Lost several little beans or fragments thereof into the chaff
tray. Some were well-roasted so I put them into the canister to
outgas. Others, which I winnowed from the chaff, weren't. What do you
guys do with these wayward fragments--i-Roast them, wok-roast them, or
just trash 'em?
And Joe, if you're lurking, how much for that drum with the finer mesh
and where do I send the money?
Peace & song,

Hi Sandy,
I wonder if this went Vienna so easily because you were using only 90%
of 1 lb (454 g). From what we've been hearing this roaster handles
darker roasts fine if using less than the full pound. It would be
interesting to hear how well it performs with a full pound. I mention
this because the ability to roast a full pound is a very attractive
feature. To the point where I am considering buying this machine even
though I have a Hottop that works just fine. Spending half as much
time roasting each week would be great!

Silly me--I thought 400 gm was a lb. (a kg is 2.2 lbs., so 500 gm is
1.1 lb.)

Anyway, it handled 430 gm of my Rocket Fuel Espresso blend (which
includes peaberries) w/o leakage, though it came out closer to C+-FC,
rather than the FC+ I was shooting for. (Used mostly Brazil Cerrado
and India Mysore Nuggets as the base, plus a little less Sumatra
Classic Mandheling, still a little less Monsooned Malabar, and about
10-15% India Robusta Peaberry). P3, D. 23 min. total, finished first
crack with about 2 min. left and got second fully rolling at about
1:17--may have hit Cool a few sec. too soon. We'll see in 3-4 days,
when it's outgassed and my Monkey Blend's gone, whether I hit the
sweet spot.

Sandy (and anyone else with a Behmore),
I would be really interested in hearing how the Behmore performs
roasting a pound of Monkey (one of my staples). I normally take
Monkey about 30 s into second crack with my hottop (usually ending
between 17:30-18:00, depending on whether the roaster is warmed up;
first crack is usually around 15:00).

My Behmor, using the same profile as my Rocket Fuel (though P4
instead) took Monkey all the way to a nice dark FC+ to Vienna, with
about 2 T. of escaped beans--which I then finished off in the i-Roast.
Yum!
