Topic: "Aussie" Coffee (34 lines)
1) From: Mike McGinness
My "kilo" of Australian greens finally arrived last Wednesday. Took about 2 1/2 weeks but when it
got here I figured out why. I'd given my almost complete mailing address. I'd failed to specify USA
and they mailed to Vancouver, WA Canada! Glad they were greens so freshness wasn't an issue...
The greens are a nice color green fairly small in size, probably 15/16 scr, (just a tad smaller than
the St. Helena Tom carried) and uniform. They have a fresh green smell.
I had to work 'till around 11pm Wednesday so didn't roast any until Thursday morning 12/13. I
roasted 5.3oz by weight in my Cafe' Rosto for 8min to City. Tough to wait so Friday morning (about
22hrs rest) made a before work drip pot in our Krups with Swiss Gold filter. Good cup but nothing to
crow about. But then, most coffee dripped brewed isn't much to crow about! (IMO) Saturday evening, 2
1/2 days rest, made a French Press (Swiss Gold plunger), 1oz beans (28gr), coarse ground in Solis
177 (on 7), 24oz filtered water just off boil, steeped 3' 30".GREAT cup! Just made another 12oz F.P.
before writing this note. (Now at 5 days rest kept vacuum sealed in a pint jar.)
I'd sort of expected Indonesian coffee characteristics since they're in the same Area of the Globe
but such is not the case. None of the Indo earthy/spiciness. This is an excellent balanced cup. Not
really sweet, but not bitter at all. Mellow acidity (not the brightness of St. Helena), great body,
wonderful smooth finish. Reminds me of a good JBM or maybe Great Panama.
The kilo of greens (that's 2.2#) came to $16.54 US including shipping. That's $7.52 per # including
shipping. Well worth it IMHO.
If you'd like contact info' shoot me an email off list. They don't list greens on their website but
email does the trick!
MM;-)
