Thanks to you all for making me feel so welcome to the list, and for the wise counsel regarding the "problem" I had with the Java coffee. The neighbor to whom I gave it could be heard moving furniture over there well into the evening (it was her day off and she gave her daughter's room "a good cleaning). She said it was the best! (grr...amateurs!)
I've been in denial about the caffeine. It seems to be good for my brain and various other parts, but perhaps I've just exceeded my limits as an addict will predictably do (I swore off gluten five or six years ago for health reasons, and I put off doing it for a long while because it required that I give up beer, my other favorite beverage). While the prevailing opinion among the intervention community is that one must inevitably quit, just for today I'm gonna look into the decaf beans. And accept my amateur status. But gosh, when the coffee tastes divine, one wants more immediately! And later.
I have not been able to sort out the machine language that is interspersed with this list (it seems parts of it come through in a form that my mail server cannot translate. So I haven't been able to easily follow but I just discovered the archives and that will help.
Thanks again for being so nice. I wrote a long missive answering Brett's questions, but when I sent it it was lost in the ozone, and I can't do it again. Next time. Is somebody using "incorrigibly" in his/her closing? Drat, it's such a good word but I'm pretty sure someone is already using it.
Regards,
Ellen
Welcome Ellen - we're glad you are here... As to your experience, it all
qualifies,a nd you have much to add...
What's your favorite brewer?
What's your favorite grinder?
What is your best thrift-store find so far?
What are you looking for next?
Welcome again!
Brett

Incorrigible punster. Do not incorrige.
Welcome to the list! I've only been here a short time myself, and wow
is this an active bunch.
I've had my own battles with the demon caffeine. Sometimes I'll go
through phases where I get migraines (mostly aura, not much headache,
if any, but my brain gets all weird for a while - migraines are a
seizure disorder, of a sort) and it seems that coffee *smell* may be
a trigger. Slamming back a couple of espresso shots doesn't help when
I'm in that state either.....
But thankfully, these phases don't last.
I did try drinking mostly tea for a while. Not really sure if that
helped or not, but I missed coffee. Lapsang Souchong was nice, but it
was no match for a nice espresso.

Ellen, I'll add another welcome to the list!
This is the best hobby ever - I still don't get the subtle notes (A quest!
Hand me my sword, Sancho!), but I love just about every cup I brew.
The decafs that Tom offers are unbelievable - equal in quality to the
caffeinated beans. Just a word of caution - decafs tend to brew up faster,
(w/almost no chaff, which is great) so just be prepared for a bit of a
learning curve.
And, of course, I will add my usual recommendation - get a gmail acct, even
if it's only for this list. You can't believe how organized it is. The
digest form was way to confusing for me - I get individual mails, and gmail
makes it all so easy to read.
Keep having fun!
Lynne
