Topic: IR2 Crapping Out? (4 msgs / 82 lines)
1) From: Larry Williams
I've had the unit for almost a year. I have typically used Pre 2 to
roast and ended the roasts somewhere between 2:00 and 3:00 remaining. A
couple of weeks ago, I noticed the small holes in the chaff collector
lid were starting to plug. More like a little dirty. After that I
noticed the roasts going closer to 1:30. I just thought it was just
venting better, but this morning I decided to roast a batch of Panama
Organic La Berlina Estate and the first batch went to the end - I
finally ran out of time by default and the unit started to cool. The
beans were barely to City. I removed the plug and restarted the batch
and it went another 2 min. before I decided to cool. Didn't want to
burn up the unit. The next batch I used a custom profile designed for
darker roasts (FC+). The roast made it to City+ and I cooled. I
checked the outlets and they were 117 vac. So I don't think voltage is
the problem. What was interesting was that during the last roast I
could hear the first crack. This is the very first crack I have ever
heard on the IR2. I did notice that the fan speed was was noticeably
slower and quieter.
This is bad timing with Christmas.
Is she dying?

I don't know, but I will point out that unplugging/replugging the IR2
is a losing proposition; there are reports that for the first 3
minutes the roaster limits the temperature to 350 degrees or
thereabouts, so you can't really pick up where you left off that way. :(
Good luck, and let me know what happens. I'm hopefully getting some
dead roaster parts to play with (I use an IR2 as well) and will let
the list know my findings.

Sorry for your loss...........
My IR-2 did about the same thing on Sunday and, I concur, that it is bad
timing with Christmas! I am learning the ways of HG/BM as to not have to
spend additional money at his time(or any time) of the year.

I had the IR1 & IR2, when the screen on the IR1 got clogged mine did the same thing,
my wife cleaned it really good and it worked like new again, when it finally quit and we
bought the IR2 we ordered an extra screen, so we could soak one while we used the other
. When the fan finally gave uop and quit with the IR2 we bought the Gene Cafe, no
complaints yet but its only been a few months. BOth the IR's lasted about 1 year at 3-4 roasts
a week.
good luck
