I really would like to do as a former friend once suggested...Buy a brand
new snow shovel, put it on my shoulder and start walking south until some
one ask?...."Whats that thing on your shoulder?"....then park myself...

Missed us today, Brett (we were shopping and partying); but will be
home next Sat. the 29th. My part of Chicago is about an hour and a
half (faster if you're a leadfoot) north of I-80. Along the way on or
close to your route along I-80 are Muse Cafe (serving Intelligentsia),
3422 Ridge Rd. in Lansing, IL (US 6 exit just over the state line from
IN; Panini XpressO (sic) in a strip mall at S. Harlem & IL 83 (aka
College Dr.) in Palos Heights, about 4 to 5 mi.n. of the northbound
Harlem Ave. exit on I-80; and Bean Encounter (where my bandmates in
the SASS! Trio plus Phil Cooper & Margaret Nelson played tonight as
The Bittersweet Christmas Band) in Minooka, about a mile south of the
Minooka exit off I-55, just w. of its junction with I-80. I've played
at the first two and will be playing at the latter Jan. 11. Dunno if
Muse is still in business, as they pretty much stopped booking
acoustic music and concentrated on rock; but they do have very good
coffee and coffee drinks indeed, as well as great soups, salads, and
pastries. Panini XPressO (formerly called Cafe Arabica, until they
realized that mostly Catholic, Indian and WASP Palos Heights is a bit
touchy about its proximity to largely Muslim Bridgeview) has nice
strong coffees as well as great panini (duh), soups and salads big
enough to share. Nice salads and coffees at Bean Encounter as well,
but was there only long enough for a breve latte (enroute home from a
folk fest) and to drop off the press kit that ultimately got me and
the Bittersweets our gigs.
If you are willing to drive a bit north into Chicago proper for some
homeroast (or to Metropolis or a branch of Intelligentsia itself),
write me backchannel for driving directions. (Same for any
Chicagoladers who want in on a mini-gathering).
Merry Christmas and safe travels,
Sandy
P.S.--the Bittersweets played the Prairie's Edge barn concert series
(as did the SASS! Trio in May) in Independence, IA--not far from your
home town last night. Timing is everything, I suppose.

Thanks Sandy! My two vacuum caraffes of Kona got me through to Cleveland,
and then halfway New Jersey. We had rain yesterday - well, both days. It
rained and rained and rained. Started looking for that old guy building the
boat - was just certain I would be running into him soon...
Seriously it rained hard for 10 hours - at times reducing visibility to 300
feet, xcept when a semi went by, and you hoped you came out the other side
OK...
So today is Sunny, high of 50, and we head to New York to get Jon and Stacy
at the Airport...
In the cup is Christmas Blend, drip brewed through a paper filter :-S
Java, Costa Rica, Brazil, Kinunu and Kimel - and it is good...
Cadet gets a french press tomorrow for Christmas, and a Zass. When he opens
it I will return to good brew...

Be careful--NYC gets our weather a day later. We went to bed Sat.
night after a thunderstorm, 51 degrees. Awoke yesterday to high winds
and 11 degrees. Snow showers (little to nothing stuck) all day &
evening. Made it all the way up to 22 last night. 24 now (high of 29),
partly cloudy, no more snow till Thurs.
Merry Christmas,
Sandy

The weather stayed good today,a nd looks good the rest of the week...
We snuck into NYC, parked on the street, ate in Chinatown, then visited all
over Manhattan... At 8 we snuck OUT of NYC, drove to Trenton New Jersey for
Christmas Eve service at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral... We have not seen
the Bishop since he was a Vicar back in 1980 - Last time we met, he
performed Debbie and my marriage ceremony. What a great worship service,
and afterward, what a neat reunion...
It's 2:30AM - and it looks like Santa Claus has arrived...
I need sleep - Merry Christmas!
Brett
